Manual Transmission - Clutch Noise 200 1977

I recently swapped an M46 from an 82 parts car into my 1977 242DL. When I did I replaced the clutch but did not replace the throwout bearing.

The car shifts well but it makes a "rubbing" noise when it is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released. It's not a loud noise, but it is noticeable when idling. I tried adjusting the clutch cable thinking that might have something to do with it, but to no effect.

Could this be a symptom of a bad/worn throwout bearing? What else could it be?

You might consider that it is a input shaft bearing. It will sound more like a dry rolling sound or would might say a tiny roar down there some where! The bearing may not be just perfectly smooth.

With a rubbing sound I try to plug in what two materials could sound like that and which one is moving. In this case with the clutch out all turns as a unit assembly leaving only the shaft support components inside the transmission.

If it is not making a horrific noise, I would let it go.

My 84 has the same mild whirring sound, if I thought of it as rubbing. I have noticed it since I got the car at 112k and it has 168k today. I plan on investigating it when I change the clutch out, someday, relatively soon.

There no Russian blood in my family tree. (:)

Thanks Phil. It's good to know that it doesn't warrant going through the drama of pulling the transmission back out to investigate. I'll let it go and monitor it for the time being.
