Poor mileage, won't idle 200

My 1990 240, 5 speed is getting poor mileage and basically won't idle (RPMs are too low do it dies).

I pulled a plug and it looked rather like it has a rich mixture (too much black).

I realize there are many things possible, but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.

The car runs pretty well otherwise.

Thanks!

Air mass meter, possibly oxygen sensor.

    Got any codes?

Could also have more than one issue.

Clean flame trap & flush PCV system. Clean throttle body, check for vacuum leaks.

Check Idle Air Controller too once other items are done.

      Thank you.

I checked the Fault Codes and got a 2-2-4, which is Coolant Temp Sensor.

So, I'll replace this first and see if this evens things out mixture wise, and go from there, and will circle back.

      (looks ugly to replace...)

Swapped out the Coolant Temp Sensor (loosened intake manifold and pulled away from cyl head, was able to get a 7/8" box wrench end over the electrical socket and onto the sensor to remove).

Car runs really well. And it idles!

        Thanks,

        Steve
