throttle cable 200 1989

Is there only "one way" to install a new throttle cable in our '89 wagon, or is there any 'shortcut"?

Mines basically OK, but i think it's stretched out and won't let me adjust the idle at the 'top part' due to the stretch. Anyway after 23 years might as well put in a new cable. Thanks.

(For some odd reason I like fixing things that aren't broke. Well, the cable is only stretched-not really "broke" -I guess.)

Did mine years ago on my 90 after I accidentally broke the original. Pretty easy job except that you need to be a contortionist to feed it through its hole in the firewall from the inside of the car...:)

    Don't know of any shortcuts.

I'm confused by both the original question and jwalker's reply. If the cable is stretched idle shouldn't be affected at all--full throttle would not be attained. If the cable is frayed it may not be returning all the way and not allowing the throttle to close----and the reply---If you are replacing the cable and conduit the cable gets fed through the firewall from the engine compartment to the pedal----pull some slack at the throttle spindle and unhook the engine end--remove the "C" clip from the engine end of the conduit and withdraw the works--remove the screw holding the conduit to the firewall--remove the cotter and clevis pins at the pedal--pull the cable and conduit out of the firewall from the engine side. Installation is the reverse. -- Dave
