Solenoid attachment: from at to speedometer. 700 1989

When I bought this car last month, a replacement instrument cluster came with the car, as well as this mystery "solenoid". I have no idea why the new cluster is not working, or what this attachment is for. I have looked under the car, but cannot see where this device connects, or where it attachs to at the instrument cluster. This is a 740GL wagon. 2.3 ltr engine.

The only way I know of to test the speedo is to use a volvo special tool and conect to the sensor in the rear axle. You connect the tool to battery power and the speed sensor, and the tool generates a speed signal. You may have a blown fuse on the cluster. There is a short (1-2") plastic piece with a conductor attached by 2 screws.

A big thanks to all of you that helped with the mystery solenoid. After further investigation, found where it is to be installed. Though the mystery remains with regards to why the instrument speedo does not function. I have looked at the older cluster, and found no circuit breaker as described. This is the one of the most unigue cars I have ever own. So many changes from one year to another. It is no wonder they are a neutral country. The engineers couldn't seem to make you their minds what to design. Even with the uniqueness, I wouldn't sell this car for anything.

Do you have a part no. or a pic of the part?
Maybe check the wires at the diff, if they break there the speedo/odo is dead.

I am not certain with regards to the "diff"? Is that the diffy or diffirential? There is no part number on the part, and unable to download a picture.

I located a part number, and manufacture, and appears to be another number:
        Bosch
        Part Nr#: 3515093
        952

He may be describing the differential sensor. If so, see if the sensor is in your differential. You should be able to see it from the back. But a stabilizer bar might be a little in the way.

There is no solenoid that attaches to the cluster. You may have an overdrive solenoid. does 4th gear work? the od solenoid attaches to the drivers side of the auto trans just above the pan, in about the middle the middle.

Thank you Bob. The od does work. Is there a way to check the speedometer to see that it is operational? I have replaced the original with another unit. Thank you for the help.
