Hi all,

have 760 gle. went away for month now car wont start.
battery charge fine, checked for fuel - undid fuel rail rhs after pressure regulator- fuel comes out under pressure.
used spare spark plug to check for spark against each spark plug lead. in all cases spark detected. removed spark plugs and examined them - they look fine, fairly new - bosch +4 platinums 10k kms old
removed distributor cap early in the piece and made sure clean and dry.

i suspect either :-
1 another component has died (but what)
2. something else (but what)

all ideas gratefully accepted.

    I vote for crank position sensor - I put three in our '90 744 TI - The first was used.

      Many thanks - tried the wriggle test.

      kept the battery charger hooked up

      car started. ran it for 5 mins, took it for a short drive, ran well, switched off. tried to restart in 5 mins - no luck

      i forgot to add in my previous message that engine does crank, but does not start.

      there is no movement in the tacho when engine cranks(may be an important clue?)

      points to something that maybe picks up a bit of condensation(i think). once car used regularly, not a problem but leave car for a few weeks and first start up( after a week) is normally difficult. I'll check the crank position sensor connection

        With spark and fuel it should run. It appears you have those, all the time. Then, is there sufficient fuel Pressure to open the injectors? I recall a long long story of hard starting that was due to a clogged fuel filter; gave enough fuel to the rail, but not enough to get it into the motor.

          That means it is the Crank position sensor. About $50 buck last I recall. It sets between firewall and engine. You'll see the wire going to it. It is on the bell housing. 10 minute fix once you get part. It's one of those touchy installs. Be easy with it while removing it.

            I found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

            good one to remember.
            symptoms - motor turns, seems to want to start sometimes but does not


            One of the connectors to the starter motor is a spade connector. I wiggled that Bl*dy thing until it was tight... and bingo.

            I think what happens is that when the car stand for a while outside(say a week or so), it gets condensation there which probably shorts out one of the wires (acts like an anti-theft secret switch)

    Try the wiggle wire test. This is a real test Ford used to use. It is in the books. If all else fails open the hood and wiggle all the wires you can find. I did this a few times with my Volvo. I would wiggle the wires and after awhile it would start. It turned out to be the Crank Position sensor. But you said you were getting spark. Just a thought.

    I have also replaced the Fuel pump relay (green one) and radio suppression relay in the engine bay (lhs). made no difference

      You’ve checked many of the simple things, but have you checked that the timing belt is intact?

      Just draw a mark across it, and see if it moves.

          In that case, check for intake air leaks. The o-rings for the intake manifold tend to lose their elasticity.
