Ooops... that damn rear hatch lock... 1800 1973

So, it was late, dark, we were lost.

Seems somebody (not me) decided to remove the key from the rear hatch when it was in the open position.

Is there a way to get that key back in there? Or is the lock just a goner?

Otherwise, the car has been fantastic. a bit over 5000 miles since we left Colorado, currently in the Miami area.

Gonna go find some alligators, I hope. Oh boy! Alligators!

Does on have to pick that lock in order to... lock it?

"Bring anything of value in the house, this is Miami" is what our friends said...

Well, we grabbed some stuff, but forgot other stuff. And a back window that doesn't lock.

Nothing got took.

The one goal for the day besides getting back on the road: Get the back hatch locked, one way or other.

On a whim, went out with key again, and thought... maybe if I kinda press to one side of the tumbler as I try to insert the key...

Key went right in, I locked it. And bam. We're done!

And we got to see alligators yesterday! Yay!

Sometimes I think it's better to remove anything of value from the car and leave it unlocked. Let the bastards get in there and find nothing. At least then you are not dealing with broken glass or locks.

But if you have something valuable that is permanently fastened to the car, that's another story.

Yep... totally with you.

That rear hatch glass... hell, just the lock mechanism... is worth more than anything in the car. Even without removing 'valuables'...

If only I could remind these Miami tailgaters of that :)

There's got to be a way.

No doubt you've already tried to wiggle the key back in. Maybe with some extra lubrication (WD40 etc.-this is not intended to get into a WD40 merits discussion!)it'll go back in.

Can you pull the whole handle and get it on the kitchen table to take a closer look? I'd imagine the lock cylinder installs from the backside.
Obviously it comes apart somehow.

I guess this doesn't help much, but I'm with you in spirit!
5K miles already? That's cruisin'.

It was somewhere in eastern Kentucky that we decided it'd be a good idea to visit friends in Miami...

"Only 1000 miles, and we can drop in on that grade-school friend I've not seen in almost 10 years on the way"

Car will hit the 100k mark before this trip is done. Which is something I've never done. I've clicked 'em over the 200k and 300k mark, but never the 100k... Hope there's a motel nearby when that happens. Can't really just pull over and share a champagne toast on the side of the interstate :)
