Late v. early M40 444-544

I put a late M40 in a car that apparently had an early one in it. The difference that is stopping the swap is the output flange, which is slightly larger than the original. I pulled out the flanges to swap them, but the later model output shaft has way more teeth than the early one so that won't work.

Does anyone know if any of the later model M40s had a smaller diameter output flange?

I really didn't want to spend any money on this swap, so otherwise... I'm going to shoot it. No, no - It just means it'll be off the road for a while until I find a replacement earlier M40 in the Bay Area.

Thanks,

-Ben

'61 says B16 engine and M4 transmission. Unless of course somebody's been into it already and swapped in a later engine (B18) and M40 transmission. Have seen tell here of special B16 setup with bell housing that could receive an M40.

Somebody has indeed been into it. There's more of a story, but yes it has a B18.

Hello,

The later M40 was available with a smaller output flange to match your driveshaft.

But as you found out, it is not the same output flange as the earlier M40 or either M41's.

We probably have a good used one.

I think I got what you're saying. I've sent you an email. I would just like to verify with measurements and teeth counts and then I'm ready to buy!
