Pin-hole coolant passages on gasket instead off tear-drop size? 700

Took the head off my 1984 760 turbo yesterday, and noticed many of the coolant passages are only slightly larger then pin-hole size.

The new gasket (elring)also has the very small holes for coolant!

My car has overheating problems, although the rest off the coolant system is in very good order.
Is there any reason why I can't cut the gasket so that the coolant holes are tear-drop size?

Why are the gaskets like this, when the head and block have the large tear-drop size??????????????????????

Thanks,
Ian.

It's for coolant flow control. If you cut these holes bigger, you'll get hot spots on different areas of the engine. Do not enlarged the holes..

Question answered also by JohnMc of turboBricks.

The tiny holes are just there to let bubbles out. The larger holes are to force most of the coolant to take a long path through the block (from the water pump) to the back of the head, then forward through the head through the thermostat and back to the radiator.

This helps keep temps more even over the whole motor, and also prevents the flow from 'shortcutting' the back end of the motor and just coming in the front end of the block, rising up past the first cylinder or two, then out the front of the head.

I would tink the gasket hole size should match the hole in the block/head. If not cut it out.
