Good place to buy shocks and brakes 900 1991

940 91 immaculate condition sedan b234f auto

Time to replace the shocks and a few suspension components.
Same for brakes, need disks and pads all around.

Suspension is original, pads I did maybe 6-7 years ago.. I think the rotors might still be from 1991, I might have had them turned once.

I typically buy from fcpgroton. Any better place or better prices elsewhere?

Also what brands if I want good quality?
- I do not like super hard suspension, prefer an OEM type of ride.
- For brakes, no cheap chinese rotors and a minimal brake dust.

Thanks for your suggestions.

    eeuroparts.com hasn't been mentioned yet.

I've been buying more on amazon.com. Seems only recently that their prices have become competitive and that they offer many parts. Perhaps the auto parts market is their next step in taking over the world.

By far I order most from Advance Auto/CARQUEST. Free shipping or in-store pickup (the latter making returns super easy) and when I have had shipping issues their customer service has been very responsive. Their prices are usually competitive when you apply their rewards program and the regular 20 to 40% off coupon codes that you can always find online.

I am off Rock Auto right now. I placed an order last month (a pair of brake rotors). as of June 21 Fed-Ex had reported it "Damaged during shipment" and stated it would be returned to the shipper. Rock Auto's automated system still has me in a holding pattern waiting for Fed Ex to maybe deliver it. I've known for three weeks that it's not going to be delivered, but they have no customer service phone or email to contact.

      Dear rehsper,

Hope you're well. If Rock Auto doesn't respond, why not: (a) re-order the items and (b) once received, dispute the original charge via your credit card company, on the basis that the items ordered were never delivered? To back up your claim with the credit card company, print-out the FedEx tracking that shows the shipment was never delivered to you. I presume - possibly wrongly - that RockAuto has another set of the rotors you need.

I didn't know Rock Auto - from whom I've ordered several times - had ended phone customer service. If e-mail responses are prompt and on-point, that may be a better way. That said, I dislike non-responsive e-mail responses, i.e., blather (meaningless words) with no relevance to the problem presented.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

        Good Morning Spook,

I haven't resorted to placing another order or credit card disputes because I'm lucky enough to be able to put off the brake job. It's inconvenient since I had the whole works apart ready to receive the new parts. The upside is that in the meantime I may be able to diagnose a sticking caliper piston or slider if such a condition exists.

It's doubly annoying since I've now realized that amazon.com sells the same cheap Chinese rotors for the same price but with free shipping (and a customer service department).

To address the OP's request for parts opinions:
I go for the cheap Chinese rotors; they're just cheap cast iron parts regardless of the name of the box or the price you pay. Over the years on Volvos, a Mazda, Honda and Minis I've never had any trouble.

I've been happy with Advance Auto's "Wearever Silver" pads. Cheap, effective, and good pedal feel though they do produce a lot of dust. The ceramic pads are nice because they don't dust, but I find that the pedal feel is awful. Also during highway driving in the rain (cold wet brakes) they take a frightful second to bite after stepping on the pedal.

        Cheers,
        Will

          Dear rehsper,

Hope you're well. Sorry to learn of your brake troubles in terms of disrupted spare parts' arrival.

Caliper pins can "stick", if not coated thinly with silicone, high-temperature brake grease. The thin grease coating ensures that moisture, etc., cannot bond the pin to the housing.

Caliper sliders should be wirebrushed to remove dust accumulations. Take care that the edge of the wire brush does not catch the edge of the stainless steel and bend it.

Also, the edges of the brake pads may need to be ground (using an abrasive wheel) so that they move smoothly over the stainless surface.

          Hope this helps.

          Yours faithfully,

          Spook

I highly recommend an upgrade to the Bilstein Touring shocks/struts. Smooth ride and handling. Not stiff like the Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks/struts.

I have swapped Biltsein Tourings into one of my 945s and love the ride. I'm about to put a set in my other low mile otherwise all OEM 945.

I understand the desire to keep your immaculate brick stock, and like the OEM ride... But my experience with the two 945s shows the Bilstien shocks/struts ride better, a little tighter but still smooth.

There are threads discussing the Bilstein shocks/struts. The older rear shocks had an issue with oversize mounting holes creating a knocking sound. That issue has been fixed and the set I installed does not knock.

++++1 for Bilstein (B4) Touring as Mr. Nabisco recommends.

Avoid at least the Bilstein (B6) HD for front struts. With good sealed accordion-style boots water gets inside the strut assembly and freezes in cold weather. Hit a pothole or other road surface imperfection and voilĂ ! Seized strut cartridge as in my 1991 240, left front; installed since 2000. Bad for strut mount.

Bilstein (B4) Touring will outlast the Monroes, KYBs, Made in Mexico Sachs by Boge or Boge by Sachs (Boge, owned by ZF, does not export to North America if they make them in Europa for Volvo so far as I know.)

I guess the rear Bilstein (B4) Touring does not have the rattle on the unibody chassis studs or on the trailing arm securing hardware as they do on 240 (on my 1992). Annoying, the rattle is, Yoda.

Give AutoZone a chance. You can order and they ship to the store. Pay cash in person or use your card. They carry Bilstein, Gabriel, KYB, and so forth.

I like to pay cash and also prefer a real store. Though compare prices, transit time, and shipping for web purchase versus Autozone ship to store.

Though FCP Euro and, less so, iPd may be over all less $$$.

      Hope that hep kaps (halps).

I usually compare prices online between FCP Groton and Rockauto.com. Sometimes I check Amazon, too, but usually buy from one of the first two places. I like Rockauto, have bought a bunch from them. No problems.

As for struts, I put Monroes on my '96 960. Like the ride I get on them. And brakes, I bought Akebono ceramic pads. They're quiet, no dust, and don't warp the rotors because they don't hold in heat like the metallic kind. I'm sold on ceramic pads.
