Just like the 'NIB' the keyway is built in to the gear.

After the Pulley and Belt are off. The gear should just pull off the Crank.

Pay attention to which Washer comes off first at the Gear. The notch for the NIB is shaped different on the outside and inside washer

The key is not a full length key either, it's just a small square finger on one end of the inner bore of the gear.

If the gear rotated on the crankshaft it could be jammed on there. Most like thing is the crank turned a little and the gear did not. If you can rotate the gear back to the slot location it might pull back off easily.

The engine turns clockwise when seen from the front. Chances are the gear is a little bit counter-clockwise from where it belongs. You may be able to get a pipe wrench around it and give it a turn back to where it needs to be.

Then you can get it off, and install the new one. With any luck a junkyard might sell you one for $5 or $10... otherwise you'll be buying one from a new parts place ($$$) or maybe someone here can find you the right one. (93-up have different timing belt teeth style.)

Good luck!

"how do i remove crank timing gear?"
• I always recommend the "rope trick" because it works. I've used it several times, as have many others here over the years.

"is there a keyway on crank gear?"
• Yes, the crank "sprocket" has a built-in key that fits a slot on the crank shaft. It also has a small "nub/nib" on it's forward face that fits a slot on the back of the crank pulley. This is how the pulley's offset reference timing marks are synchronized to the true crankshaft timing.
