Pipe plug sizes 200

For years I've used NPT plugs in my Nissan blocks, but figured I should really use the right ones and I've got a B230 going together today. The plugs on the two faces of the block seem to be 12mm 1.5, based on the hex size. The big one on the side of the block at the top maybe 18mm 1.5? Anybody know for sure? I have no good way to measure these other than bottom diameter.

Thx,
DS

    Hi David,

I don't have any info on the sizes but I was somewhat curious as to where these plugs were exactly. And how come you're replacing them? I have never read about these and want to be informed as to any future hiccups.

There are three small plugs, two at the back and one at the front, that plug the oil galleries. One is the pickup gallery to the filter from the pump. The other is the main supply gallery.

I received several questions on why I was pulling these between this post and my post on Turbobricks. This block was hot tanked and my machine shop does a "fairly" good job. They usually pull the plugs and then replace them with new ones, sealed in place, and this time they did not. They used the excuse that they no longer have a source for the metric plugs. I wound up drilling out the old ones, and I'm glad I did. I learned long ago that the hot tank process cannot take the place of a good scrubbing. I never assemble a block before it has been thoroughly scrubbed with soap and water. I have a set of wire "rifle" brushes that I use to clean out all the threaded holes and the oil and water galleries. In this case running the brushes through the block netted me a bucket full of filthy water and lots of sediment and sludge. The block drain at the back had to be cleared with a screwdriver and a wire brush on a drill. Whatever was in there wasn't even phased by the hot tank!

In the end I used regular NPT pipe plugs for everything. 1/4 NPT for the small, 3/8 for the large water plug near the top of the block on the side. I was unable to find anyone within 75 miles stocking metric plugs.

    David,
In my experience if it looks like a pipe thread it probably is a pipe thread.
Pipe sizes are pretty much universal.
    1/4" pipe is 0.540" OD and has 18 threads/inch
    3/8" pipe is 0.675" OD and has 18 threads/inch
    1/2" pipe is 0.840" OD and has 14 threads/inch

Yep. After messing around on the web for an hour, I just went out and ran my NPT taps into the holes. Sure seems close enough for me, and I'm sure this is what I did years ago on the Datsun blocks and decided the Japanese Metric threads were close enough for rock and roll. I think I'm gonna fly with it. There has to be some reason no one stocks metric plugs in L.A.--it's a pretty big city.

"L.A.--it's a pretty big city." Got that RIGHT, even if you don't consider the 'burbs!

After I posted that I looked at Brit pipe sizes and threads and found that they are about 0.025"
smaller in general and instead of 27, have 28 threads/inch, instead of 18, they have 19.
I think this is still close enough that if you screw them together they will work because
of the softness and ductility of the metal and the taper of the threads.
