PS problem 700

My 740 just started a steering problem. Symptoms - pulsating at the steering wheel when I turn it, either way, plus a moaning sound. Found it low on fluid, sucking air. Filled up with fluid, sound stopped, but the pulsating is there. The pulsating is also happening on a straight course, at certain road speed.
Can I assume a new PS pump will fix it, and is the A1 Cardone pump a good one?

May just need more bleeding to get air bubbles out. 700

Try raising front wheels off the ground and, with motor running, cycle the steering wheel back and forth between L and R limits (don't hold at either limit). Since air has been churned into tiny bubbles, it will take time to expel.

Here's a good write-up, with my post about the need for vacuum as a response.

Pump problem solved - I managed to bleed the air by doing a few hard lock 3 point turns in my driveway. Fluid level went down 1/2" during this process and the vibrations stopped. Now to search for the leak!
      Thanks.

"Now to search for the leak!"

        • It may not be a leak. The lower fluid level is probably due to the volume of expelled (bled out) air bubbles that were in the fluid.

Hope you are right, but something caused the low level in the first place, allowing the air to get in. Short drive this am, and no detectable loss.

If you don't see any leaks in the obvious places, it's likely pinhole(s) in the steel lines on the rack itself. They'll rust out over the years. I went through this a few years ago. First I had to top up the reservoir every tine the steering got noisy, then I started adding Lucas PS Leak Sealer to thicken the fluid and slow down the leakage. I eventually replaced the rack with one I got from a junkyard, but I painted the rusty lines with POR-15 before putting it in. The used rack was $100, but I've seen rebuilt ones on line for ~$130 exchange if the shipping doesn't kill you.
