Crankshaft seal replacement 200

I finally got around to replacing the timing belt on the 86 240 after about 60k since it broke the last time. I decided to replace the cranshaft seal this time and order a "Gates" timing belt, idler, and a "Gates" crankshaft seal(2 1/16" x 2 11/16" x 5/16"). The only problem was that the seal was slightly smaller in O.D. than the OEM seal and almost slid in with finger pressure. I reordered another seal, this time a Beck/Arnley product, for $3.00 more money and $6.00 less shipping from the same vendor, Rockauto.com. Perfest fit and no leaks!

Regards,

I wonder if you wen ton the GATES website if you can see that the recommended Seal is the one ROCKAUTO sent you. If it is.. Contact GATES and tell them they are wrong.

Good to know.. I would have trusted the GATES part.

Well, I hadn't thought about that, but it would be an option. I've used Gatesa components from T belts to water pumps for years and not had any problems. Another option is to get the actual metric dimensions and order seals ten at a time for about $2.00 ea instead of getting ripped by after marketers (Volvo OEM =$20.00!) I paid almost $8 for the B/A seal as opposed to $4 for the Gates.

      Regards,

I'm with you on the seal measuring and buying.
I tend to do this with Bearings. The Dealer or the Auto/Small equipment stores mark these up drastically. If you can read the number on the old seal you can get the same for much less.

Just thought I'd mention to you Tony--Beardslee Transmission--in Hauppaugge is an excellent place to go for bearings/seals--willing to work with you matching measurements, etc, if the numbers are unreadable and selling at wholesale prices.
For Big Harry---the mail order parts house I deal with lists a silicone (orange) front seal by Elring--$3.36. The seals Volvo now sells are of a different material (dark brown in color and thinner in section). They require being pressed in for even fitting (they'll bend easily if cocked) and have a removable plastic shield holding the lip edge back so it can't fold under. After installation you pry the shield off. Supposedly they work better. I've installed many and never (except for the first one--bent it) had a problem. -- Dave

Yupper That's the place I go to get the bearings.
Last year, I fixed a freebie Gas Hedgetrimmer (Commercial grade). It was seized. Carl's Equipment wanted $25 per Bearing, I bought 2 for $12 from Beardslee, And that was with buying the Better rubber sealed version. Ran the heck out of it last year. All is good.
