OBD Terminal Usage (aside from #s 2 & 6) 200

I am just curious - how are the other four "black OBD box" terminals used? I never see them mentioned on the forums, or in the manuals (haynes, bentley, greenbook).

on a 240, they're not used. the 960s, 850s and later cars had other things like abs, etc. good luck, chuck.

hi pork- curious about your comment. have been learning tons about my 92 240 wagon in the last two years since ive owned it. have not used the obd 1 terminal on the fender well. have found from past experience with other tanks that it often cites a code problem that is useless or an error. sure though i will have to use it at sometime in the future or else go to the cleaners at shysters. the old tried and true seat of the pants tests from the pre computer and obd days plus advice on this forum so far have worked. however my 92 does have abs , computer stuff and sensors up the kazoo which appear to have the ability to shut off spark , gas or other key gadgetry. as an example, when the current mpg of 25 drops consistently to 8 and the obd cites a dead 02 sensor making the gas mixture too rich ,i would replace the sensor. then the car continues to get stinko mpg. i have seen that so i dont have a ton of respect for obd 1 or 2. wouldnt the obd 1 on the 92 read crapouts in those items on the other terminals? thanks oldduke

the ecus aren't smart enough for self diagnostics, just the injection and ignition. abs has been around since the early 80s and always had an ecu, but didn't get self diag. until 85-86 with bmw and mercedes. and, there was never an ecu for the ac on a 240. the 240 was already wasto be replaced when they introduced the 740/760, so, any improvements, exspense, etc. were saved for later models and the 240 got off with the minimum. good luck, chuck.
