tie rod end bad, question about alignment

HEllo- I am a relative novice to maintaining my own car, separated after 19 years and suddenly in charge of a lot of decisions.

I own a 93 960 wagon and it was showing uneven tire wear and pulling to the right. Today, to save some $$ I went to a national chain-type shop instead of my regular volvo mechanic for an oil change, tire balance and alignment. The price was a great with a coupon.

As it turns out, they told me AFTER they finished the work, including the alignment, that I need a new front tie rod end for $200 and then I will need to get the car realigned for another $60 after that, and that it won't hold the alignment they just did without the repair. There must have been smoke coming out of my ears when the manager told me that.

My question, is this even remotely ethical for a shop to do... to do an alignment knowing that it won't hold due to a needed repair, not telling me this information before they do the alignment, and then charging me for it anyway. The most satisfaction I got out of them was that they would do the realignment "for free" if I go to them for the tie rod repair.

Of course, I am very reluctant to even set foot in that business again. Is $200 reasonable for that repair?

Thanks!

tie rod end bad, question about alignment

If you have a bad tie rod end, they did NOT align your car. Plain and simple. They may have gone through the motions, but they did not align your car. If they charged you for an alignment, they are either dishonest or unqualified. Do not give them anymore of your money. You could try to get some of your money back or demand that they align your car for free after you have the tie rod end replaced somewhere else, but don't give them another penny of your hard earned money. Tell all of your friends to tell all of their friends about these jerks!

tie rod end bad, question about alignment

Stop by a local garage, and ask where they send their cars for an alignment. Most MOM and Pop shops do not have the equipment. Depending on where you live, the alignment usually costs $80-100, and good shops will tell you if there is something wrong. Most will repair it and align the wheels, so ask how much. An honest shop will also tell you if the bushings died.

assuming it's the inner tie rod, ok, plus alignment. the outer, no, it's too high, unless it ORIGINALLY included the alignment.

the alignment should not have been done if there was any play in the steering. pay the checkout fee, usually no charge as it's pretty easy to spot, come back when you are ready for the repair and alignment within 30 days, pay for that and the checkout fee paid on the first visit is deducted, is the way i would've done it. good luck, chuck.

Not that I'd fault anyone for trying to save some $---but this is exactly why my son--a top notch BMW and MiniCooper tech had to give up his independant shop and go back to the dealer taskmasters. Too many of his clients were opting for the cheapo-chains for oil and brakes leaving him starving between "big" mechanical and/or diagnostic jobs.
You should not have to pay for the alignment just done--the shop should not have proceeded with it knowing there's worn parts in the system. It's not that the alignment won't "hold" -- with worn parts it isn't in alignment to begin with.
"porkface" is right about the pricing if it needs the inner joint--and correct about it being WAY to much if it's the outer but that doesn't matter---you should run (drive) away from this place as fast as you can. Bring your regular guy a cup of coffee or a six-pack along with a "thank you for being there" note. -- Dave

tie rod end bad, question about alignment

Thanks for the feedback. It is an inner tie rod end. The $200 quote I got is *just* for that repair and doesn't include the original alignment. And then they originally were telling me I would have to pay for the realignment after the tie rod repair. I have it in writing that they first quoted me that, and then later said they'd realign at no change. (But do I really want to take my car back there??)

Thank you for the tips on how to handle such places in the future, ie checking on issues before asking for actual work to be done.

In any case, there wasn't much play in the steering but a lot of pulling to the right. And they had it up on a different lift for tire rotation and balancing + oil change just minutes before. They even called me back there to point out the smallest oil leaks in other spots, etc... while it was still up on the lift, but didn't mention a damaged or bent inner tie rod until **after** taking it to a different bay and actually completing the alignment and parking it back outside. To me that seems unethical and I'm trying to determine if it really was (unethical) or just my slant on it.

      Thanks!!

Sounds like you got what you paid for. You went in asked for an oil change, tire rotation, and alignment and that is what they did.
