96 960 Broken bolt in rear end 900

Hey all. Yesterday my wife was driving her '96 960 wagon and heard a loud pop from the rear end as she pulled into a parking lot. When she tried to leave, the car was making a scraping noise from the rear. She looked under the car to see if anything was stuck under there-nothing. Took it to a nearby shop and they find a bolt that locates the left side of the rear end has broken. They are trying to drill it out and replace it. Anybody ever seen this? Car has 190K miles.I think somebody replaced some rear end parts (based on P/N stickers on various parts)before we bought it 2 1/2 years ago.

I have had this happen on a 97 and 98 V90. It is one of the bolts that holds the rear spring. There is one bracket on each side of the rear end and two bolts in each. Both times it tore up the cv joint boot. I had it fixed at Volvo. They had to drill out the bolt and replace the cv joint boot.

Both times the head of the bolt broke off.

If you plan to keep the car, have all 4 bolts replaced.

      Dear jimo,

Hope you're well. I have high regard for Volvo fasteners, etc. What you report - heads separating from the shank - is troubling. It suggests these bolts lack the required strength.

Given the time/cost of drilling-out a failed bolt, might it be worthwhile to replace these factory-original bolts with Grade 8 (Metric Grade 10.9) bolts? These have a minimum tensile strength of 150,000 pounds/square inch.

So far as I know, Grade 8 is the highest grade fastener ordinarily available.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook
