740 RSR: Why do I have two relays but no electric fan? 700 1991

740 '91 sedan, auto, all original, mint condition 100K, REX/Regina

Following a recent repair on idle and startup (Thanks Lucid and Aleekat), I am wondering why I have two side-by-side black RSR-like relays on the engine compartment when the car has no electric fan.

Reading the FAQ, it seems when there are two, one is for the injector power and the other for elec fan (my fan is belt/clutch operated, no fan for A/C either).

When I repaired the idle/startup problem, both relays were in need of resoldering, and the symptom was such that most of the time the pump would not run when cranking.

After resolding those two relays, all is 100% fixed, including the idle problems when the car was actually running.

Anyone have this setup or have any idea?

Thanks in advance,
Greg

My 1990 745 TI had a e real nice, expensive pusher fan that was seized, It also had a thermostat that had its center removed to provide better cooling I guess.

I think that the fan is necessary because mine would run after about 5 minutes if idling, even on a cold winter day.

Do this, stand centered in front of the car, hood open. look straight down. below you and between you and the top of the radiator, is a set of plastic retainers set in a black piece of plastic and directly above the grill bearing the volvo symbol. if removed, that black plastic panel will reveal the ac cooler and the electric cooling fan in question. this fan pushes the air through the ac cooler and the radiator.

an easier answer is just look through the grill... its there.

Do you have a two prong connector upper right side(passenger side) of radiator? That's where the fan would plug in. It's a temp sensor to trigger the fan. It sounds like the previous owner removed the electric fan. Normally accessed by removing the front grill. They are notorious for rusting. I added an after market electric fan years ago replacing the factory original which seized.

There is no connector like you say.
The two wire harness of the two relays leave and do in the same direction (together).

There almost was no previous owner, we have owned the car since around 1997 or the latest 1998 as I recall and bought it with around 35K kilometers. Its surely original, I am the only one who ever worked on it. There never was a condenser fan (originally R12).

I guess I would need to run some tests and figure out in what way it appears to be an oddball in this area.

That is rather odd. Went up a couple parts sites and they all show an aux fan for your make and model. Wondering, I don't know if there is a difference, is yours an original Canadian model? I saw your profile.

          Canadian.

I guess they figured it was not hot enough here to put a condenser pusher fan :)
NOT! It's stinking hot and humid here during the heart of the summer.

However still does not explain how both relays were worn down (i.e. used)...

I'll have to do some tests when I get the car back from my father in law.

          Thanks!
