544 master cylinder cap 444-544

Hello,
I installed a new master cylinder with the remote fill cap and having seepage at the cap/cylinder seal. I have tightened the cap as far as I dare (i.e. really, really tight), and there is still fluid seeping out from between the cap and cylinder.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

The sealing area was not smooth enough. It was not under the fluid before, so it did not leak - if it leaked, it came out while you were driving and did not drop on your floor.

Very few metal to metal seals are liquid tight.

You either have to get it machined extremely smooth, fashion a gasket, or use some sort of sealer.

You only need to remove the cap again when you rebuild the cylinder - I would go the gasket or sealer route, and NOT make it TOO tight.

It appears that you have done a rebuild, and I'm hoping you can help me: my just-completed rebuild (62 PV 544) doesn't work. Stainless sleeve, correct rebuild kit, tube from firewall reservoir is open. Pump the pedal as much as I want but no pressure or flow... any special tricks on assembly of the cylinder? Did I maybe get the check valve at the spring end in backward? (I followed the illustration in the Volvo parts manual)

Many thanks,

Al

Hello,

Need a little more info.

What year is your PV?

Was the original engine, a B16 or B18?

What exactly did you install, an early brake master with the newly available adapter cap or a later brake master?

544 master cylinder cap 444-544

Hi there, thanks for the response. 65 544 b-18 new M/C from Swedish treasures with the new firewall tube to remote reservoir.

The new cap that came with the m/c stripped immediately upon tightening, so I'm running the original remote m/c cap with the new m/c, new cap seal and new line running up to the reservoir.

After some reading around, I'm suspecting the connection between the old m/c cap and the new reservoir line (as it seems they may be incompatible?).

Thanks again for any input!

Hello,

Did you install a new hose at the reservoir or did you install a new reservoir?

I have not seen the reproduction fill pipe and fitting.

It might not have the correct flare or style of tube nut.

I am surprised you stripped the brand new mater cylinder cap!

As a follow-up, the new master cylinder remote fill cap threads were incompatible with the new filler pipe threads. Also, the new M/C surface was not allowing a seal using a crush washer. I surfaced the M/C seal area, surfaced the copper washer, installed the new M/C cap with the original fill pipe and all is well.
