240 Passenger Door Replacement 200 1991

I had to replace the front passenger door on my 240 after an accident destroyed the old door. I got the new door on but I can't get it to align properly or something. The upper edge of the door opposite the edge where the hinges are is hitting on the door frame between the front and back door. If you slam it, it will close and it looks alright once closed. But then it kind of pops open and if you try to shut it without slamming it you can see that it doesn't line up. I have spent hours trying to adjust it- in one position it closed a little better, but then water was getting in through a gap about a foot up from where the rear-view mirror is. Should I take it to a shop and pay to have them try to adjust it, or is there soemthing else I can try?

Are you sure the damage was only to the door?
How hard was the hit?

That's the first thing that came to my mind after the description of the problem he's having....especially now that he's indicated that the front fender was also damaged. I'm pretty certain that the hinge post is tweaked as well. It doesn't take much to throw the whole door out of whack. Don't ask me how I know....

There was damage to the door and fender. I can post some photos of the original damage and what it is doing now, if that would help.

I didn't get a picture yet- is it possible that the hinges were bent slightly- and replacing the hinges would fix the misalignment?

The hinges "might" be bent. Also the pillar where the hinges hag from may be tweaked.Pics help.I had to change both doors on the drivers side sedan and it took a little fussing around to get the gaps right and the doors flush with the body.Helps to have some extra hands[helper].I would loosen the bolts and try to close the door flush they way it should be.Then with a helper slowly open the door trying to keep this orientation. Then tighten the bolts.Good luck, keep at it.How hard was the door hit?Any pics of the damaged door?

The door and fender were hit hard by a tractor trailer on the highway- truck driver was changing lanes and didn't see me. I uploaded a series of photos of the original damage and then the new door. The guy who pulled off the original door left some minor scratches and dents from prying it loose. I can't tell if there is damage to the hinges or pillar. I just know that no matter what I do the door does not shut like it should.

when you slam it, it does shut, but sometimes leaks water at the front above rear-view mirror, depending on how it is adjusted

Are you just adjusting the hinges or did you move the Striker out just a bit?

I only made adjustments at the hinges where you can angle the door to tilt or slide in and out. Right now I have the bottom edge pushed all the way out and the top pushed all the way in.
