Question about connecting SU HS6 choke cables.

So I'm getting ready to fire up my 1970 145 S after having pulled, replaced or reconditioned, and reinstalled most things under the hood, including a swanky set of SU HS6 carbs I was able to buy to replace the Weber carb that came with the car. Doing so required me to purchase a pair of new choke cables since I no longer have the integrated coolant temp-controlled choke.

After examining the connection points where the cable housing should be secured to the carb body, however, it looks as though they aren't compatible. I showed a friend of mine the connection points, and he seems to believe that the carbs might actually be from another model (and potentially make), hence the differing choke connection. The SU's on his 1968 145 S have a clamping connection that seems to accept the cables.

But I admit that I could just be ignorant about the setup and am not seeing the obvious, so I wanted to throw this out to the BB and see if anyone has any ideas on how the cable housing is supposed to be braced using this connection.

My first instinct was to spread the halves of the "nipple" wide enough apart to accept the cable housing, and then try to clamp it using the given clamp, but after trying that approach I'm pretty convinced it isn't the right way. The housing is much larger than the diameter of the clamp, and it doesn't seem designed to be spread open that wide, let alone the nipple halves.

Any ideas? Anything obvious (or maybe not so obvious) that I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

Question about connecting SU HS6 choke cables.

    Hello,

With that style of choke cable clamp you will need to remove about an inch of the black plastic outer covering of the outer cable before trying to install into the clamp.

This will reveal the wound flat metal wire of the outer cable.

We carefully use a single edge razor blade to strip the outer covering.

If you have the reproduction cable, the outer diameter of the outer cable without the plastic covering is larger than the original and you will have to carefully spread the two ears of the cable receiver without breaking.

I do this with the little clamp removed.

This is because they are not using the same outer cable.

The original outer cable did not have a Teflon lining like the reproduction cable.

Question about connecting SU HS6 choke cables. 140-160 1970

Ah, that does indeed make for a smaller diameter without compromising the armored housing of the cable. I did try that out before I cut the cable down to size, and you're right, the larger diameter of the aftermarket housing flared out the ears of the receiver and made it seem a bit odd - hence I thought that wasn't the right way to do it.

But since this seems to be the way you've done these as well, and since my choices are limited at this point, I guess it's the right way after all! I'll finish that up this afternoon then.

      Thanks a bunch!
