something broken behind temp. control lever 200 1983

The warm/cool lever was really hard to move for several years, then something finally broke loose. The lever moves freely now, but it doesn't change the temperature...

I thought maybe it was the cable, but when I took off enough stuff to see the end of the cable back there, the cable is fine. It's so hard to see what's going on, and I can't make much sense of the words in the book.

Would it be the "heater control valve" back there that would have something broken inside? Might it be fix-able, or do I need to just buy a whole new valve?

The lever mechanism could also have broken. Try doing some research in the green manuals on k-jet.org for diagrams. Is the cable moving on the valve? If you have to get into the center console be very careful with the plastic panels. They can be very brittle. Check back for directions and hidden screws.
