I had an overdrive problem when the light came on and sure enough no 4th gear. looked at it and replaced the solenoid ,soldered the relay. Now the light works the relay clicks and so does the solenoid on the trans but still no OD. any ideas

    Several threads about this in the archives.

    I've had this problem > once. Remove the OD unit and 1) run the car to push fluid through the ports; or 2) blow compressed air through the ports (I bend a rubber hose).

    Are you saying the light is on but the OD is not engaging? Is this car new to you? The system is designed for the OD to be the normal mode--no light. Light on is to remind you that the OD is in the off position--maybe switched off because you were towing, going up a steep hill or driving in heavy city traffic. -- Dave

      The light goes on and off as per the button and the solenoid and the relay both click when you do this. I have had this car for a few years with no trouble.When the OD failed, the fuse was also blown. Upon inspection the wire from the connection to the shifter was bare from rubbing on the tranny. I have fixed that also. Thanks for your thoughts. Do we think the small channels are blocked? thanks again. Joe

        The small channels could be blocked.
        Are you sure the two small ring washer
        are there and in good shape. When I first had
        over drive solenoid issues, my problem landed
        up being a missing/broken/damaged small ring washer
        on the solenoid.

        Check your relay again. It may click sometimes, but might not always work. I'm not really good with electrical things, but perhaps a bad relay is why the fuse was blown. Is the relay burnt on the inside? You might try swapping in a known good relay.

        When you say connection do you mean the solenoid connection? If not, check the wiring there and look over all the system's wiring.

    I do not own an automatic but have electric overdrive manuals.

    I fluid change can help or cleaning the solenoid orifices can fix mine.

    I have read that the solenoid can be modified or install a bypass plate to make it stay in overdrive as long as it shifted fine before.
