85 245 Transmission parts question 200 1985

In removing my transmission, I found out where the source of my leak was.

in this picture (hopefully it works fine) http://image68.webshots.com/468/1/71/36/2671171360102125362uyVdaG_ph.jpg

you can see the areas where my leak/issue is. That isn't my picture, btw.

On mine, the part where the shaft comes out, seemingly had a loose ring (?), and the bottom part (the smaller one), part of the bearing set up popped out.

Also, there seems to be a gap in the rings (?) around the shaft. Kind of like the rings on a piston, with the gap. I realize that description is bad, I can provide pictures later (I just finished working on getting it off my car) if the one above doesn't show up or make sense.

My questions are these:

The ring that came off (it's flat), is that a vital part? Not in the sense that I'm going to throw it away or nothing...but what is it?

IPD sold me a seal, where does it go? I don't see any seals transmission.

I'll post pictures tomorrow, because I think I'm failing to describe this accurately.

the pic you linked to is coming up "403 Forbidden".

Do you have a copy of the green book? there's a decent scan available at kjet.org if you don't. Oil seal replacement starts on page 37.

I would suspect the strange parts you found are simply the remains of a decomposed oil seal, but it's hard to tell without a visual.

        Hello,

The "ring" that popped out is the bearing race for the front bearing on the cluster and it can be tapped back in.

The gap in the bearing snap ring is supposed to be there.

The "thing" on the input shaft is a shim and needs to be reinstalled when you put the bellhousing back on.

And the front lip seal is mounted on the bellhousing behind the snout for the throw out bearing.

          Thanks.

I get everything but the seal part.

This is what I'm talking about

are you saying it goes on the bellhousing?

            Hello,

Look at the back side of the bellhousing and I believe you will find the old seal in the opening where the input shaft goes through.

I replaced the seal today. The old one was SUPER brittle.

It basically blew apart whenever I put any pressure against it. It's no wonder it was leaking!!

my back loosened up enough that I could go check out my bell housing. I totally see where it goes now. thanks!

(I had taken my bell housing off under the car, and left it there as I removed the transmission)
