? Idiot Light Weirdness - May Be ABS Related ? 200

Ive been on the road for two weeks now so I am without my arsenal at home. Currently I'm pounding the blacktop on the interstate system of Texas, which, at times, seem to have no speed limits.

Yesterday, I noticed something strange which occurred three times after high speed runs (80+ MPH); as I coasted in for fuel, most of the idiot lights came on dimly while the ABS warning light was fully illuminated. A blip of the throttle extinguished the lights and all seemed back to normal.

Since I have a bare bones tool kit and no meter along for the ride, I am worried of impending doom and that I might get stuck somewhere in the vastness of the great state of Texas.

Has anyone out there seen this symptom and what was the cause?

One note from the back-story on this car: when I bought it about 6 months ago, the ABS light was on full which was corrected by replacing the ABS system fuse under the passengers seat.

Thanks, one and all,
Rich

SOLVED! ? Idiot Light Weirdness - May Be ABS Related ? SOLVED! 200

Bingo, KenC! Not only were the brushes worn down to nothing, but the plastic regulator housing crumbled as I tried to removed one of the screws. I'm glad it did, too, because that screw was frozen to the alternator and I was trying to do it quick and dirty with the alternator in place.

I'm now thanking the Lord that the regulator queefed out after I landed at my sister's in Fort worth. I really would have been SOL along that wasteland known as I45.

The only good thing is I found an good old school import auto parts house in Fort Worth - Steve's A-1 Foreign Car Parts
4310 West Vickery Boulevard, Fort Worth, TX 76107
    (817) 737-3171

Not only did Steve have a German-made regulator on the shelf, but at $35 it was less than half of what O'Reilly's quoted and that was before their additional shipping charge.

Now, if I can only find out how to stick that spiffy "answered" flag on to my posts.

    Thanks, one and all,
    Rich ‎

Thanks for the input, Silvermine. I had a similar thought, but I didn't want to prejudice any input. I have a new voltage regulator in the glovebox so if there's no A-zone nearby, I'll swap it out.

      Thanks, again,
      Rich

I just had to replace my brush sets (and regulator) on both of my '93s ... 200

It may be the brushes. I had a similar experience a few months ago in that, after a highway trip (though not at Texas speeds), as I pulled into my garage I noticed all my idiot lights dimly glowing (although the ABS light wasn't prominent).

I pulled out my brushes, and one was really worn down to nearly a stub, and after replacing the set (and regulator) I did the same for my wife's car (same model year, '93), which was also really worn down although not yet giving symptoms.

Therefore, replacing the brushes is the likely solution. The Autozone (or similar) shop may not reveal just marginal brushes, though.

        Good luck.
