Hi. I just bought a 1993 940 wagon (non-turbo). It has 128K miles on it, but looks like it was stored outside for a good part of its life. No rust, though. Nice clean car, looks like. I am replacing a '93 940 wagon with 240K miles on it with this one, so not a newcomer to this model at all. This wagon is pretty much a copy of the other one save for interior. Also a Regina car.
What I am seeing is a little amount of coolant coming from the water pump gasket (the one mating to the head). Since I have very little information about the maintenance history of this car I can only assume the WP is original. I am going to replace all belts (including TB and tensioner) anyway and I am wondering if I should just replace the water pump or try to re-seal it with a new set of gasket and seals. the amount of coolant is very small. Are the water pumps on these cars good for more than 128K miles? Am I on borrowed time? New WP is about $75 with gasket and seals (genuine Volvo), so it's not a huge expense, but if these pumps are known to go 150K or more I'll leave it alone.
Thanks!
P.S. I'll be adding more questions, I am sure, as I get more familiar with this car. I have owned the other one from 157K until its untimely demise (rear ended and totaled) at 240K and have replaced WP, TB, ball joints, etc. Looks like here we go again. I'll need to refresh my memory on these things as I go along. Thanks in advance to all who contribute!

Better late than never. You mentioned that the car was stored for a while. The pump gasket probably dried out a little and sprung a weep. The OEM pumps are pretty rugged, so I would just replace the gasket. 200K on a pump is a good life span, if the antifreeze is flushed regularly.
The gasket on my 220 weeped when I got it, but after driving it a while, the weep stopped without intervention. The pump makes no vibration when in operation.

Well, I think I am having the weep healing itself. In any case, it is so slow as to not effect the coolant level very much at all. Every now and then I see a few drops of coolant on the pump housing. I bought the gasket and seals and am ready to change them, but I am waiting for real nice weather since it is not at all urgent. Seems to actually be getting better, but I know that's not likely. Anyway, I will replace the gasket and seals (I think the top one is weeping) and leave the pump alone as I think it's fine for a few more turns around the block at 128K miles.
Thanks!

Hi Vladimir,
I just put a new pump on my 940 just to be on the safe side as it was pretty cheap. One less component to worry about and a pretty quick easy job. I did find it a bit fiddly getting the cambelt top half cover off to getto one of the bolts and although i'd done one before i forgot that the fixing for the metal heater pipe that runs into the back of the pump was secured by a bolt with a nut which led to some cursing - my own fault for rushing. Didnt need to lever it up too hard to make the seal with the head, took a bit of wiggling to get the top seal to seat correctly though. Why not justtake yourpump off and make sure everything is tight on the shaft and that the bearings are ok, there seems to be very little to go wrong with them but a good idea to havealook then decide whether you wantto renew.

You can buy just the water pump gasket set from felpro or a few dollars 2 round doughnuts and a pump gasket.
that is all I would replace if the pump still spins without any play.

If you are asking if you should take this pump off, buy a new Seal and reuse the pump. OR Crack the bolts loose to push the pump up will probably ruin the Pump to Block gasket.
I'd say get a new pump while you have the Front accessible.
I got 200+ miles on my original pump and it was still tight and quiet when I replaced it because of a weepy Head to Pump issue.
For $40 ish I think you can get a HEPU pump from FCP Groton.
My HEPU pump currently has 115K miles on it.

Dear Vladimir,
Hope you're well. I replaced the water pump on my '93 940 at 136K miles because the pump-to-head seal had begun to weep. While the pump itself was quiet (no bearing rumble), I decided that after 17 years, the pump didn't owe me much. I also replaced a water pump at 94K, when the top seal began to weep.
At 128K I'd replace the pump, all hoses (radiator and heater), the heater valve, and drive belts. I'd use Volvo brand hoses, only. Rubber's durability depends on how it is formulated and processed. These things cannot be known by "eye ball".
Volvo heater hoses last for 15 years, at least (perhaps less in places with high ambient temps for many months, e.g., US South/Southwest; Northern Australia; Mexico; India; North Africa/Arabia, etc.).
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook

Dear Spook,
Volvo heater and radiator hoses can last up to 15 years in the tropics. I change mine every ten years, and keep the old ones as spare. At 10 years, the rubber is still soft.
After market brand lasts a maximum of 2 years, and they start to harden up and become brittle.

Hi,
This is a question. The question is if you want to spend money. I can’t answer questions like that.

ooooooooooo
The answer is I don't want to spend the money if I don't have to. If this is a 200K mile pump I will leave it alone. If it's a 130K mile pump I will replace it. This was part of my question. I am not a big fan of replacing things for the sake of replacing things. This is why I asked the question. Assuming it's an original Volvo pump, is it close to the end of its life at 128K miles? Is this a better way to ask?

Hello Vlad,
Change the pump and be done with it! The pump is not expensive and you will regret not doing it when the bearing seizes because it has water in from a seal leak. The belt will either burn off or the pump shaft will break off, probably when you(or your family) are 100 miles from home on a dark road in a blinding rain with no cell tower and no service.
You do not know when the pump, or if the pump, was ever changed(probably not), so change the pump, timing belt, idler, camshaft and crankshaft seals and forget about it until time for the next belt change.
Regards,

Goatman - you have contributed some good technical knowledge in the past to the BB in response to poster's questions. This has been helpful.
Lately you seem to be on a trend to chide posters for the form or manner of their questions. This constitutes criticism, although you may think you are merely being tongue-in-cheek. This is not helpful.

I have been one of his strongest critics, but in this case I think he's correct, that the real question is whether the money can be spent.
To ask if a wp ought be replaced at 125k while doing a timing belt and tensioner is to me, not a serious question.

I agree.
There are plenty of Car forums out theer where people spend more time worrying about the question and the spelling. Just answer the question or pass it by. The BB is no place for Critics.
