Hey all,
I changed out my injector O-rings yesterday on my '88 245 - seems to have helped my rough cold idle!
Anyway, i was *going* to change my Coolant Temp Sensor with a new (uninstalled)one i received from a friend who scraped his 245. Turns out, my sensor only has a one spade lead to it AND is a 18mm socket vs. with a newer looking dual lead and is 19mm - to add to the confusion - there is a plug floating around under the hood that fits the NEW cold start sensor perfect - and is the correct wire length, etc, etc...
Did volvo put 2 connectors under the hood for this sensor?
thanks for any light you can shed!

Are you sure you are looking at the right coolant temp sensor? There are two. One is for the temp gauge. I believe this sensor has one spade connector. The other sensor is for the fuel injection. I believe the injection temp sensor has a connector with two conductors. I *think* the injection sensor is toward the rear of the head under the intake whilst the temp gauge sender is closer to the front of the head.

you are correct sir- my bad!
I'll have to double check myself!
thanks for the quick reply,

FOUND it! - it's the one closest to the firewall. Looks like the intake mani will have to be pulled to get to it.
still don't know what that extra plug does, however!

Peel back the boot on the connector and post back with the wire colors. There are no "extra" connectors of that type on your car, and certain of them, if inadvertently exchanged, will damage your ECU.
The ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor below the 3rd runner is accessible with a 10" extension and deep 19mm socket, if you remove the AMM and throttle body plumbing. No need to pull the manifold, although getting a new gasket there is never a bad idea.

Art - as always: thanks for the enlightenment!
the color of the wire to the 'extra' connector under there are green and black

"there is a plug floating around under the hood that fits the NEW cold start sensor perfect - and is the correct wire length, etc, etc..."
By that I am picturing a connector that would fit an injector -- same as the one that fits the ECT. That one should be wired blue and black. The only one I can imagine with green and black would fit the AC solenoid on the firewall, but I thought that was a different style connector. A photo might be helpful.

that makes sense - since the previous owner(s) disconnected the A/C!

Like Art, I think the A/C connector is different from the temp. sensor. Is your oxygen sensor connected? It uses a similar connector.

Only one O2 sensor on my '88, correct?> - on the exhaust manifold? - yes, that one is connected...

Yes, only one O2 sensor. However, there are two connectors. One is a single spade connector and the other is a two conductor connector which is similar, if not identical, to the connector on the temp. sensor. The two conductor connector is for the O2 sensor heater. It is possible that someone has replaced the O2 sensor with one that does not have a heater in it leaving the heater connector disconnected.

Yep, i replaced a single conductor O2 sensor w/ a 2 conductor (in effort to help the cold start / rough idle issue i'm having) - this unidentified connector is on the driver side of the firewall - by the dipstick. Looks like it would be used in that area as the cable isn't very long.

Where does the wire on the connector go? Does it disappear into the wiring harness?

Hey Aaron,
Instead of getting clearer, your picture of this is growing fuzzy.
1) Your '88 should not have had a "single conductor" lambda sond.
2) Replacing with a "two conductor" baffles me. That is the only number of conductors I have not heard of, for a lambda sond.
3) The lambda sond does not get involved with starting, cold or otherwise.
4) We are trying to establish what style connector you are looking at; i.e. would it fit the ECT? I suspect not. The heater connector for the lambda sond would, but its wire colors are not green and black.

Here's a pic of the o2 sensor - it literally had an O2 sensor in it with one connector - that was replaced with the correct o2 sensor (sorry for the confusion on that)

Here's the unidentified connector in question:

Hello Art,
I have a 1986 240 dl the second picture on the post show the ac sensor wire? I have the same connector near the brake booster and was wondering where the connector goes? I replaced my wire harness (engine) but there is no place for it to connect to. the green wire and the double pin connector for the idle boost is connected but when I saw the second pic I went to look for it an found this wire. My ac compressor work but I have no cold air or condensation, compressor was replaced a few years back but still is r12.
