This One WAS Interference! 700

Thought I'd post this to help keep us all vigilant on maintenance. My sister-in-law's 745 died the other day and I told her to have it towed to my house so I could get to it when I had a moment. I was forgetting that unlike my 945, hers was a 16valve interference engine- and then I found this sad snapped belt waiting for me. I feel I cursed this to happen by recently putting in new seats on her car and other things that looked good but weren't important.

Haven't gotten in further to figure out just how bad it is, but she'll probably have to keep enjoying my Grand Cherokee which has become the official loaner car to all friends without a vehicle...

Give us more details on why the belt snapped... Too many miles? Pulley or tensioner failure? Oil leak? Oil bolt failure?

Will do soon, Steve. Just haven't had enough time to do more than remove the top cover and find the sad belt- I suspect it's the sheer miles on the belt from how worn it looked. But I'll give a fuller picture hopefully by the weekend.

Not that it's important, but puzzled why my image link in the last reply went away. Trying again in the interests of brickboard mechanics...

Also a fail. Maybe my image was too long? Trying a shorter one, at 600 width.

This is oddly close to chasing down a starting issue on the car. 3rd times the charm, at a width of 500 like my first post.

I upload my photo to Flikr, and then use their share options and grab the HTML code and paste it into BB Message.

I was uploading to my own website, and doing the same. There just seemed to be a glitch because it was late at night, and I should remember that's when the BB hijinks happen.

That's one sweet red car!

Let me tell you how bad it is...
The valves are bent, so, pull the head and it's associated cam carrier, get the valves replaced, get the correct adhesive for putting the cam carrier back on, give yourself plenty of time, and take it easy when removing the cams so you don't break them...
Put aside about $800 for the parts and the labor for a shop to fix the head (replace all the valves and a light valve job).
ANd then remind your s-in law to change the timing belt BEFORE IT GETS to 50000 miles!!!

Thanks, man. Gruesome!

The body on this car is in great shape, so I don't want it to go to the yard, though I was starting to think "that steering rack could go on MY car...". But it's black, and we shouldn't let any more of those go away!

And here's the critical patient, looking pretty good from the outside. Could use better wheels.

Nice looking car. I have one just like it in my driveway, my wife's daily driver.

If it got away without any damage to the pistons, it's probably worth saving.

Even with extensive damage, you could drop a rebuilt single cam engine in there for about 2 grand, and get another 200K out of it.

That's what I'm thinking too.
