Substitute part no. for overdrive relay? .... 200 1984

Hi. I just came back from the Volvo dealer ... I had ordered an overdrive relay for my 1984. They told me that the order flashed back on the computer that it's no longer available, and it doesn't show another (superceded) part to substitute.
This dealer has always been very good about ordering parts for my old cars, so I don't believe that they're just not trying. Does anyone know some other relay (albeit not an "official" swap sanctioned by Volvo :-) that can be substituted?
Apparently my '84 falls into the earlier period of the AW7_, grouped as 1981-4 that uses one part, 1307793-8, differing from a later period, 1985-9, which uses 1347764-1 instead ['90-on uses 3523804-7]. Has anyone tried these later relays in an early AW7_?

I hate to think of the alternative! Since it's not especially unusual for this relay to go bad at least once in the life of the cars of this age (this would be the third one in the lifetime of my '84), this shortage will mean a *lot* of cars losing their overdrive gear in the coming years.

Permanently bypassing the control of the gear by either rewiring or blocking the solenoid (which isn't the problem here) is not good for me, because I use the button control a *lot* -- I'm always manually downshifting into 3rd either to hold the car back in traffic or to enhance acceleration in some passing situation where the ordinary kickdown effect (full throttle shift) would be too dramatic. Maybe that's why I've used up so many relays :-).

Anyway, any suggestions for a substitute would be appreciated before I resort to tearing the relay open and cleaning or resoldering. Not that I'm afraid of soldering, having hand-soldered what seemed like a couple of thousand LEDs for my external LED lighting project (in Rolling a couple of years ago). But for the money, I'd rather put in a new relay if at all possible.

Thanks all.

I haven't looked at the overdrive relay. But my impression is that relays are simple devices which are usually used to isolate a high voltage/amp circuit (that powers the item) from a low voltage/amp switching circuit.

Would another 12 volt high amp relay work? The light is low voltage so you could keep it in the switching circuit while the high draw circuit gets the overdrive.

As someone commented below, just because the dealer says it is NLA, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I ran into this problem with my 1969 BMW back in the 80's and 90's. When the computer says the part is NLA by goodness there must be none anywhere. Good luck in your search.

I do not think you use your shift lever too many times. From what I see in Art’s post the relay is entirely too complicated for what it ultimately does, which controls the solenoid and a reminder light.

A lot of stuff to latch on a relay, just so they can use a cheaper, less thought requiring push-on button switch. The relay is in there for current and so another switch can open the circuit for you.

Have you ever changed the other switch in the transmission that cancels the relay?

Someone makes another single pole, single throw, latching relay and probably better.

Ken, I believe the answer to your question is no. There is no substitute, that isn't a kluge, compromise, or hack.

I suggest you warm up your soldering pencil and repair it, or one of the previously replaced units. It won't be nearly as tedious as wedging LEDs into .100 grid perf board. Here's a map, in case you find you need to replace a dried-out electrolytic, and prefer to test it on your desk. I've included the others if you care to compare the designs. The 7764 is identical except the "OD ON" light is referenced to ground instead of the cluster's battery supply.

If that's impractical you could send it to me, and I'd fix it for you.

Aftermarket won't work for you? FCP has "1983-1984 Volvo 240 Overdrive Relay
    $32.92"

(I think you have an AT - your ref to 3rd and kickdown.)
