NEVER apply sealer to a head gasket. If the gasket manufacturers thought it was a good idea to use sealer, they would specify its use. If you think you have more gasket experience then a gasket corporation, please publish an engineering journal article about the results.

I note that the gaskets shown in the Best Gasket website are for flathead (valve in block)
engines. Volvo has not made such an engine for MANY years....
Since Volvo OEM gaskets are made by Elring, their recommendations probably take precedence.

That is interesting information from BESTgasket. I’ve never heard of the corporation myself, and think that it might be because they do not hold significant market share. A cursory glance at the technical archive of ElringKlinger AG reveals relevant recommendations of the resident research and engineering department. I’m not sure that BESTgasket has much capital investment in any such division.
