Rear wheel bearing replacement Help please and a few questions! 900 1993

Ok, so my 93 940 turbo has the need for new rear bearings. I have searched and searched on here and other sites, but no really good pics or procedures to go by. I removed the D/S axle tonight and I see why my bearing was bad, it has run dry and did not have too much wheel bearing grease.

Two questions:

Do the rear bearings ONLY get lubricated by the heavy bearing grease that they are packed in? or is the whole axle tube (from wheel hub to center diff) supposed to have some level of diff oil in it?

Second:

I see corrosion inside the axle tube where it is dry and obviously some moisture has infiltrated and caused some flaky corrosion to form. It goes most of the way down to the diff, but pretty much about 2/3 of the distance from the back of the wheel hub down to the diff where "sloshed" gear oil has lubed the inside of the tube.

I have only been driving this car for about ten thousand miles (it has over 330K). Does the center diff gear oil level travel down the tubes to lube the axle shaft? should I add more gear oil?

I have been trying for weeks to get the big brass plug out of the rear diff to check the fluid level, but it is all gnarled up and the bolt head is completely unusable. I tried to weld a nut to it and figured out that it was brass/bronze, and the welded nut just came right off..DANG.

I have decided to remove the speed sensor and check the diff oil and refill using that aperture.

Any thoughts or advice?

thanks
Kevin

    Dear mgcarma,

Hope you're well. Before trying to fill the diff through the speed sensor opening, saturate the differential fill plug with PB Blaster. This is a very effective penetrating oil. It should be available at Auto parts stores in North America. If it is not to be had, get a quality penetrating oil.

Saturate the plug daily, for several days. As the plug's threads are very fine, it will take a few days for the oil to work its way through micro-channels in the corrosion. The oil weakens the corrosion bond.

To remove the plug, use a Stillson-type pipe wrench. This wrench is widely-used by plumbers. It has a movable top jaw, that is moved by turning a knurled, internally-threaded ring. As you turn the ring, its threads engage teeth on the jaw, causing the jaw to open or to close relative to a fixed-position anvil, at the top of the wrench handle.

The sharp teeth on a Stillson-type wrench will bite into the bronze. As you turn the wrench, the grip tightens. I'd guess that a 14" Stillson-type wrench will let you exert enough leverage.

A replacement fill plug is Volvo #30713275. The cost should be about $2. There is also a gasket needed. That is Part #11998; the cost should be about $1. Please check with a Volvo dealer, to be sure these part numbers are valid, before submitting an order.

Once you have loosened the fill plug, ascertain that the bottom-most bolt in the differential cover - at the 6 o'clock position, on the cover's perimeter - will come loose. Through this bolt's hole, the diff oil can drain.

I'd use Mobil 1 synthetic 75W90 gear oil. It should take about 1.45 liters (1.5 quarts) to fill the diff.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Thanks John. Much appreciated. I think after 330k miles, I guess it is just time for new bearings! Any thoughts on how to clean out the corrosion?
I'm thinking long bar and vacuum cleaner, trying not to push any broken free corrosion into the pumpkin.
    Thanks
    Kevin

There is an axle seal in the bottom of the recess the axle bearing fits in to. You should probably replace those when you have the axles out. The gear oil does travel back and forth in the axle housing, that is why there are axle seals. Add more gear oil as is necessary.

The only lubrication for the axle shaft bearings is the heavy grease they are packed with. To remove and replace the bearings you'll need what is called a bearing splitter and a hydraulic press. If your don't have those, most automotive machine shops will remove the install the bearings for a small charge.
