intake manifold gasket with cracks 900 1994

As I posted earlier the 944T is idling at 2K RPM. It was suggested I look for air leaks. Examining the intake manifold unions with the head and I see the new gasket (9 months old, aftermarket from FCP) is cracked in ports 1 through 3! I'll pull the manifold off tomorrow to see if the cracks extend into the chamber and to renew it, probably with OEM. Right now these cracks are prime suspects to my starting and idling issue.

So did I overtorque the manifold to cause these types of cracks? I don't know if you can see from the pic but the gasket appears to be splayed outwards.

What is the torque spec on the intake manifold? I can't seem to find it listed in various reference sources. Is there a tightening sequence I should follow?

Thanks for all wisdom shared!

Was all of the old gasket completely removed from the mating surfaces when the gasket was changed previously?

Yes, the head was a reman from Clearwater so that surface was like new. The manifold was nice and clean too.

See my other reply to Art for a picture of the complete gasket after manifold removed.

      thx

The original Volvo intake manifold gasket is significantly superior to the aftermarket or 'OEM' style. Go get one. You'll see.

This is an intake manifold gasket with cracks.

I'd suggest 15 foot pounds starting with the middle runners and torquing toward the outer runners in stages. Gasket torques are a feel thing, and the squishiness of the gasket its a big variable.

"It was suggested I look for air leaks." Whoever made that suggestion was a brilliant person; a legend in his own mind. One thing. Are you posting about a sedan or a wagon? Conflicting sig/screen name/post contents? Makes a big difference on a idling problem, of course, especially if the paint is metallic. _smile_

Art: I think I can top that photo of yours!

Cracks on every intake. So what do you think? Over-torqued or POS gasket? This gasket went on the car in April. I sure hope the head gasket I put on at the same time holds up better than this.....

Local dealer will have a new gasket for me tomorrow.

Yes, Art, it was you that said "follow the air", or something like that. So this is where that has led....

As to my sig, I've tried to correct it for several years here on BB and it never "takes". I tried it again a few minutes ago, so we'll see when this posts if you see what's currently in the fleet. I have 2 940T from '94, a wagon and a sedan. I've had the wagon since '99. The 4 door is relatively new to me, just 2 1/2 years now. It's my teen-age son's "starter" car. As luck would have it the cars were built in the same month (9/93). Wagon has EGR and the sedan doesn't not sure why.....
