Odometer in Early 240 200 1978

I don't see much info about early 240 odometers. I took my cluster out today to replace a bulb and the temp gauge. Anyhow, the odometer doesn't count miles so I decided to mess with it and discovered that the black gear was pretty stiff but I was able to roll the numbers by hand. I also noticed a copper looking fitting directly behind the black gear without a cable going into it even though he fitting was threaded. What is supposed to go there?

There originally was a cable drive to another unit under the dash to trip a 30k miles service reminder light in the cluster. Just this evening I posted a note regarding getting the odometer to work again in my '80 245 (same as yours). Removing the drive gear on that shaft (was stiff) seemed to get my meter to work continuously. The past year or so it would work only while the interior was cold. -- Dave

Right after I posted my question I saw the other thread. I know about the service light mechanism you're referring to. Of course I didn't consider it. How do I get a center cluster tach to work? I imagine I have to run a line to the distributer to the back of the tach?

As for the tach---yes, run a wire from the negative side of the coil to the single terminal behind the tach. The tach automatically picks up the power and ground through the pin sockets on either side of the tach housing when you set it into place in the cluster. The tachs often have their intended motor molded into the back--that is--4 zyl--or 6 zyl. -- Dave
