Confused about the corrrect bulb holder for taillight 1991 240 dual filament 200

Hi All-

My car has had two slightly different tail lights since I have owned it- the left one has chrome trim (across the center) and the right one has black trim.

A friend gave me a right rear tail light assembly with chrome trim awhile back and I am just getting around to installing it. By "right" I mean the passenger side.

When I went to install it today I was surprised that the dual filament holder (running lights and brakes) does not properly fit into the chrome tail light assembly. The holder is numbered CP32-3. There are two tabs on the assembly that seem to interfere (one of them is broken, see attached photo). What makes this seem most odd to me is that the left assembly doesn't have these "extra" tabs...

So I am confused. Could it be that this particular right rear tail light assembly requires a different holder? The only number I can find on the assembly is embossed inside saying "Made in France 80 76 AA".

I don't know what car the assembly came from- it did have a different circuit boad- the circuit for the socket in question had only two conductors. But after swapping circuit boards everything works except this particular holder doesn't fit into the socket.

Anyone know what's going on here? When I look at IPDUSA I find only one type dual filment socket for this year model- http://www.ipdusa.com/products/8773/120017-volvo-right-side-bulb-holder-socket-for-21-5-watt-dual-filament-bulb-1157

Thanks,
Keith

The bulb holder on passenger side must be white on the original tail light 1991.
About 10 years ago I ever modified a 1982 tail light on right side. If I remember well I cut a piece of printed circuit (with the 3 contacts) from a 740 and solder many wires to have the brake and parking filament work properly.

Sorry I did not take more notes.

Funny you should mention the white holder... I thought it was just the "economy" version of the CP32-3...

When you say "The bulb holder on passenger side must be white on the original tail light 1991." do you mean there is a design feature which requires the white holder for a proper fit?

What year car is the used taillamp from? Pre 85 used a single filament bulb in the bottom outboard bulb.

      Hi Bob-

Yes, I guess that's what is happening- I don't know what model the assembly came from but you have given the answer (or at least an important clue).

I realize now that I am attempting to fit a dual filament bulb holder CP32-3 into a socket designed for a single filament holder (CP2?). The question is can it be done, perhaps by breaking off those extra tabs? I may just have to try that tomorrow, since this tail light assembly is no good for me otherwise...

Volvos have the year of the assembly stamped on the outside of the plastic - inside a raised circle you will find the last 2 digits of the year of manufacture.

for example if you have a 1980, you will find an 80 insside the circle on the taillights. I've got an 80 240, but the stamp reads, 79, so do all the stamps on the window glass and the rear glass. The front windshield was replaced so there is no Volvo stamp. The reason for the 79 was found when I looked at the vehicle manufacture date on the drivers door...it wss manufactured in May of 1979...for the 1980 Model Year.

One of front signal light's plastic on my car has an 83 stamped. which tells me that the previous owner had replaced this one.

Thank You! I wondered about that number in the circle...

Accordingly, the replacement is from 1983, mine is a 1991. Which also proves Bob's comment.
