Suddenly acceleration is extremely loud; exhaust vs. engine trouble? 200 1989

So I was backing out of a parking spot in my 1989 Volvo 240 DL Wagon, shifted into drive, and heard a "clunk" followed by extremely loud engine noise (almost painfully loud for me while sitting in the driver's seat). The noise greatly decreases in volume when I stop accelerating, regardless of speed, but increases in volume when accelerating while going up a hill. I haven't noticed any difference in mechanical performance, although it did seem slightly more difficult to accelerate. This may be the last straw for this car if it's a major repair; I really don't want to sell or replace it but I can't afford to keep on making major repairs, now that rust has started to take hold in the doors and wheel wells. Tell me I don't have to give it up just yet?

Have you gotten under it to look? That should tell you everything you'd need to know.

It could just be a popped joint of the exhaust system, possibly a clamp or seam of a muffler.
The first joint below the exhaust manifold is a lower header pipe gasket joint. It would be the “loudest” because all four of the engine cylinders exhaust collect and blow out right there.

If it is there, it is not hard to change and the gasket is inexpensive. Probably did not have anything to do with you backing up.

It was just the last cool down, which finished it off. It can happen anytime to anything, even the new stuff!

    Phil

Whew! That's exactly what I'm hoping the issue is. I idled it while I stood outside the car and the noise seemed to be coming from right beneath the front seats, so it sounds like that matches up with a front-of-exhaust-system gasket issue. Thanks for the input!

Before it warms up too hot I usually hold my hand around where the header pipe (down pipe) and the exhaust manifold meet up. There are three 15mm nuts that screw onto the exhaust studs there. Usually the down pipe's been free to move due to not having the correct bolts holding it down under the car. Some lazy technician could have left it all loose and void of the hardware leaving the weight to the mating between the manifold and header.

You may of lost the stud or a nut just dropped off after loosening all the way. Some have doubled up the gasket on that seem to help fill the void between the two due to an aftermarket header having its flat side not parallel to the manifolds.
