Beware the first few years of that white block Porche I-6 quattrovalve engine from a 960/(S and V 90). The aluminum block can come badly casted and have porosity issues.
Such complexity and expense of such an engine (and maybe tranny) swap, with all the systems to go with the white block six cylinder, I'd think, be prohibitive.
Like other's have said in this thread, you wanna that white block Porsche six cylinder engine? Get the last three years or so of the 960/90 series. You can restore the tuning as it is meant to be (detuned for the North American market).
The engine is both fantastic and a bit fragile. Yet, with care, they are durable and lasting.
Too bad you can mate a manual tranny to a 960/90 series. I think you have to import it from Europa somewheres as I think you can find 960/90 models with some sort of manual tranny.
And look at what BMW and Mercedes *still* do. Inline six engine offerings featuring a cast iron alloy engine block and cylinder head. It is a tradition with these two automakers. Volvo could have evolved the 164 series B30 into an overhead cam cross flow cast iron cylinder head on that block. But Volvo was not so performance or luxury oriented then. Shame.
I'd like to import the last year of the 940 from Europa. I think 1998 is the last 940 year. Normally aspired with manual tranny (no, that ain't no glass-geared M47 II stick shift in that 1998 940, either - some tranny make and model that is durable and can handle torque and horse power if needed).
cheers,
