Dash Gauge Illumination Bulbs for 1987 200

I thought the halogen bulbs used for '89 - 93 would fit my car, but they don't. What type of bulb fits the dash for general illumination? (The two large bulbs at the top of the cluster)

I believe it is also a large black holder, about 16mm diameter, not the smaller red one like on the '89-'92's. IPD and fcpGroton show the halogen's for '89-'92 only.

What is the general part # for these and where can I get them?

Dash Gauge Illumination Bulbs for 1987 200

A subject that has tormented me for over a year. I'm still working on a halogen or xenon replacement for the earlier (81-85) wedge base bulbs. The biggest problem is heat. Eight months of testing with just higher wattage, tungsten bulbs shows that even with a liner in the bulb cavity, the cluster housing does begin to deform and change color. This is with 5 watt bulbs. I also found that if you do not adhere your "liner" to the inside of the bulb cavity, it will eventually collapse. Thus the only way to make that work, so far, is with a sheet metal liner that can be wedged in place--and that gets very hot too. I have concluded that higher wattage conventional bulbs are not the answer. Eventually I'll find the 3 watt halogen or xenon. LED's, possible solution yes, and I'm testing some with standard-style bases. I think most people don't want to mess with modifying the cluster to accept an LED strip. I want to find one that bayonets right into the hole in the board.

The later style bulbs are in what is called a b10d base. Osram is the primary manufacturer. These are 3 watt halogen bulbs. They are for 89-93 240s only and will not fit the earlier clusters even if you remove the capsule from the base. I've found a slightly lower output replacement for these that's quite reasonable as I was getting bent out of shape with Volvo's pricing for the Osram bulbs, and some sites get as much as $15 each for them. Osram would not agree to let me distribute them in the U.S., unfortunately, as they have an all-powerful agreement with Sylvania. Feedback on the replacements is good so far.

W2.1x9.5d base. 12v 3w.

You should be able to find it at an auto parts store.

I did some looking around and you could try OSRAM 2821, EIKO 2821 which will have the w2.1x9.5d base at 12v / 3w. Also would probably work is a 194 bulb (same base I think) available as incandescent 14v /3.8watt and also the size you could try searching for LED replacements. They show a 194 / 168 base in several configurations, some with nearly 360 degree light patterns. superbrightleds.com have several in the 194/168 size and also sell a twist base that looks like the correct size.

Will it pull out of the socket base? Seems like the smaller bulbs are soldered into their twist in sockets.

Yes they will.

Funny you should ask.

I went to the local Volvo dealer, today, to talk about the two lights for a '92 240, he did not have any of the 12v 3w halogens in stock (I didn't think he would) but he gave me these two from an '88 thinking they would fit. They did not, the base is slightly larger in diameter.

However the bulbs are removable. If you can't find replacements send me your address. I'll drop these two in a bubble bag and mail them to you in time for Christmas!
