1991 940 se...noises, lights...odds n ends 900 1991

i recently bought a 91 940 se for 550 off craigslist. i did plugs wires and oil change right away, still need to do the trans fluids and brakes. there is a wierd rattling/vibration which happens when idling still with brakes on or in park and sometimes on the highway. the ebrak is disconnected, i'm wondering if that is it. once it was acccidently in the lower gear instead of drive and the noise was similar. i'm wondering if it is a noise from something in the the trans or driveshaft since it sounded similar. the previous owner had overdrive problems and took it to a local guy who put an overide on it. the gas pedal is really really hard, it's my first volvo so i'm not sure if this is normal or not. the gas mileage sucks, but not much can be done about that. i saw some chips that are supposed to overide the fuel mix to air ratio but i haven't seen enough evidence that it is worth the money for 2 more miles a gallon. my heated seats don't work but the lights come on. i read somewhere about soder joints being a fix for this, but wondering if that is the case if the lights still come on? now my big question here is how do i get the cover off the shifter or get the shifter out of the way? i would like to put the original stereo back in but i can't get any of that stuff apart, the shifter is so close. i have no lights on the shifter column either, it seems the light is under it and on the wrong side, i can see it through the cracks on the right. i think mayhaps whomever tore it apart to put in an aftermarket head unit didn't care to put it back right. when i called volvo dealership about the light they said there was some plug and recepticle thing that would cost 30 bucks to be ordered, but i can see a lot of wiring and light in the wrong spots. any tips on this vehicle would be appreciated. i'm hoping it will last me through the rest of college.

Read the FAQ first. Wealth of knowledge on every problem you ask about.

Are you sure about the year? I'm thinking that the 940 didn't appear until 1992. It was a replacement for the 740, but maybe the SE is a different story...

How many miles are on this car? The driveshaft U-joints might need work or the carrier bearing.

Get the thing working mechanically before you worry about the music or making any goofy fuel efficiency mods.

If you need dealer parts, I highly recommend TASCA Volvo (tascaparts.com) they are the best dealer price source I've found - best prices hands-down.

Get a multimeter and check the circuits on your seats.

thanks i'll check the faq. car has 271k on it. thanks for the tip on the parts, i waste lots of time looking for the best deal. i am a huge fan of junkyards, but there are never ever ever any volvos locally, and unfortunately the Volvo guy just moved his business to a block from my house..but our city shut him down because he didn't get the right variance or something stupid...he isn't doing anything now, which stinks because it's a block up the street.

The 91 940SE is a special case; it's best thought of as a 90 760 with a different rear body/panels. Most of the latter car is the same, and parts ought be thought of in that way. It later evolved into the early 960 cars, but shares more details with the 90 760 I am pretty sure.
If it's a sedan it has IRS; if it's a wagon it has Nivomats and thinner rear springs. It also will have the same radio etc, dash, relays, trim, and more.

good to know about the parts, i read that it was the same as a 760 mechanincly somewhere just can't remember where. car has been really great till this week, intermittant stall issues where tach drops to 0 while driving, and car stalls when i take foot off the gas. going to go clean the ground and check the heat sink to see if there is anything loose or corroded. when i got the car started again, drove it back home on highway with no problem, kept the headlights off not sure if that is a variable in the electrical equation here. no sputtering or anything to make me believe it's fuel delivery related. my friend is a volvo guru but he's busy today, so i'm going to do what i can do on my own before he can get a look at it.

        thanks!

Well you have Bosch lh2.4 so search on running issues where the tach drops.
Also search on spares to carry at all times, and Bruce/lucid's start-run post. Print that out and keep it in the car. It will save you at some point.
