Shifter console wiring? 200 1993

Working on a car that had the NSS (Neutral start) removed and jumpered and another kludge to BU lights.

- NSS and backup lights are obvious

- 2 small (~20 gauge) grey wires come down from the shifter and go to the OD relay.

- white wire goes down to OD solenoid

- Black wire to ground screw on NSS

- Brown wire to light bulb

Leaving me two loose ends

1. The ground had a 2nd black wire coming off the clip. small: ~20 gauge, maybe 22. It was cut; there's nothing around to match it.

2. There's a loose ~20 gauge white wire that goes out to the passenger side. It lines up with the ground clip but that wire stub is black. There's nothing else to match it.

I haven't driven the car to see if the OD works. The dash arrow comes on when the ground wire is disconnected. the arrow doesn't work with the OD button when it is connected.

The OD relay doesn't click with the button on the shift knob.

Haynes wiring doesn't show wiring for the shifter area. Wiring diagrams show by function, which s useless if you have a loose wire.

Shifter console wiring? 200 1993

I recently removed all traces of that whore's nightmare Volvo calls a Shiftlock on a '93 240.

I found the solenoid still on my bench with snipped off leads, one black and the other white. I removed all the associated wiring for the solenoid from the shifter housing to the shiftlock relay connector so I cannot say if that color coding (black and white) followed through to the relay.

The '93 Shiftlock assembly was unique to that year. The only wiring diagram I have for the '93 shows black and yellow conductors for the shiftlock solenoid, but that might be an error.

Anyway, I've grabbed the wiring diagram details for the O/D and the Shiftlock, but I cannot get them to settle into this message. They are in .tiff format. If you can use them, e-mail me at: thepinkster at verizon dot net .

Thanks. I hadn't thought about the shiftlock. I always think's it's mechanical but can't be really as you have to depress the brake to release. I'll email you about the diagram.

The white wire has to go somewhere in there but it's so thin I can't see what voltage it would carry. I have a 92 in the barn - I'll pull that console cover and compare.

Agree, the shiftlock and the ABS are weak additions to the car. Poor designs right up there with the heater blower, the inability to remove the shifter cover without pulling the knob, taillight ribbons, rear TABs

There are actually two wiring diagram manuals for 93 240. I have the early one, which is the one covered by the overall in Bentley, titled "92-93." The map I have on line is from the 91 manual, but stare and compare with the 92-93 version is electrically the same. I believe the electrical portion of the shift lock release and associated shifter functions did not change, while the mechanics of the shift lock solenoid got removed from the shifter bucket.

Hmmm. Whore's nightmare was probably viewed as an improvement over the previous two years, but I do understand the engineering criticism that essentially goes "anything not immediately understood by the shade tree repairman or replaceable in modular fashion after 20 years" is a "poor design." It is an outside view looking in through dirty windows on the ground floor, deserved or not. Remember the ads back then, "lasts 11 years in Sweden where many roads are not paved," or WTTE. The 93 was certainly an answer to some already noticed shortcomings, as evidenced by the radical shifter redesign and glovebox overhaul. That's quick response in the automotive industry.

Here's the electrical map and mechanical layout I've posted before. Maybe you can verify it does or doesn't match even though yours has already been butchered:

Thanks much Art. I'm embarrassed now that I didn't even look in Bentley. I rarely find their wiring diagrams of use but this is perfect.

I'll look there and see what I can find on wire colors.

It would make sense if went to the interlock. Although that does work via the brake pedal so ....?

I'll reply separately via a new thread re "good design". I do now remember the "unpaved roads of Sweden" ad. I would have guessed that was earlier , maybe re the 1nn cars.

The Bentley copy of the overall is enough to cause blindness. There are enough posts on this interlock for the 91-92 model, but very little on yours, so I'm hesitant to say, even if the electrical is the same circuit, that colors, and especially connectors, were kept in the external solenoid version.

Regarding the time period for that ad, could be way earlier, given my non-photographic memory. The point is, no vehicle is designed with the kind of longevity some of us get and expect from these 240s, especially those 19 years into the series. A "good design" for you and me might be a poor design indeed for the manufacturer, and employer of engineers. A good design might be the 72-month car battery that fails in 7 +/- 1 years. The Interstate that works after 12 years might eventually force them to build in China.

Fifty-one years ago, Herman James, a North Carolina mountain man, was drafted by the Army. On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb. That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair. On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush. That afternoon the Army dentist yanked seven of his teeth. On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap. The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years.
