Alternate locations headlight relay? 200 1983

Hey guys - I can't for the life of me find the headlight relay on my 83 wagon. My understanding is that it's down by my left foot while driving. Well, there's nothing down there. I've pulled back all the plastic covers and carpet in the area. I've also felt around in the dash area above. Sort of in a pinch right now 'cause I need to head out but have no headlights. Thanks - Jim

That relay did not appear until 1986 -- with the plastic headlights.

The only relay you have is the step relay, or hi-lo relay, on the fender wall. Most likely reason for low beam failure in an 83 is the switch, followed by corroded wiring just behind the lamps themselves. Blue wires are low beams; red wires high.

Do plumbers who become electricians install outlets upside-down? Hot on the left?

Thanks Art - I just did more digging on this site, after my initial panic of having been stranded without lights, and discovered that. Actually, the problem exists in my '91, which I feel needs a replacement of the relay behind the center console. Do you have the number for that part? Is it just a multi-purpose relay? P.S. - I was going to rob a relay out of my '83 but since it doesn't have one, guess I'm waiting 'til tomorrow.

        Headlight relay numbers 200 1983

The Volvo Part Numbers below are from the 2001 Volvo Quick Reference Parts Catalog.
The cross-referenced Bosch numbers are from a 1991 "trade catalog" (S.A.V.E.).

        240, 1986 -'93
        700/900 '91 on
Volvo 1324749-9 is the Bosch # 0-332-015-006. Bosch relays 0-332-015-012 or 013 also work.

My '93 940 had the Bosch 006 relay installed until I put the 013 in for testing (same current capacity, but the 013 has a diode in the coil circuit). It's been working fine for about 3 years now.

When energized, the Main lighting relay switches voltage to each output terminal. Terminal 87 powers the Headlights (Hi/Lo relay terminal 56). While 87b powers the Parking and Instrument lights via fuses 15 and 16.

With the Main relay de-energized, the Parking and Instrument lights are powered directly from the switch, in the Parking light position. See note below:

        • NOTE: The two relay outputs (87 and 87b) are NOT internally connected or "common" to each other until the relay is energized. That configuration is required to prevent Parking light voltage from "back-feeding" to the Headlights when the switch is in the Parking light position and the relay is de-energized.
