240 non- starting issue, trouble shooting 200 1992

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

I bought a very inexpensive 1992 240 with a no start condition.
The PO believes it is a CPS due to intermittent issue with starting.

While giving the car a closer look, I noticed the absence of the 25 A fuse on the driver's fender.
Question 1 - Did this disappear in later year 240's?

The plugs were a bear to get out, looked fairly clean, BUT were gapped about .040.
The distributor cap was worn and pitted as was the rotor. I replaced plugs, cap and rotor.
The Bougicord wires appear to be in good shape, no apparent cracks in rubber.

I started to troubleshoot by Bentley table c in section 200.

Starting with fuel pumps.

There are no apparent leaks.
There is no pump hum when the key is put into position II. It got late, I retired to RTFM a bit more and plan to pick up the troubleshooting this afternoon.

I plan to bypass the fuel pump relay at terminal 30 and 87 (red - yellow red)in order to find out if it is the relay or the pumps.

Question 2 - Does this jumper wire need to be as mentioned in Bentley, with 20 A fuse and toggle switch? Or can it be something more simple?

I've perused the older posts for info on this. Lucid has walked so many people through various model years I feel like I should know this by now.

    Hi Miguel,

The blade fuse moved inside the car in 91. Just like your 93, it is #6 now. Jumper fuse 6 to 4, as Dan suggests, to bypass the fuel pump relay (half of the white injection relay). With the car off, the pumps should come on.

That one-second pump buzz you normally hear when you turn the key on is expected to be heard on all LH2.4 cars (89-93) as well as k-jet cars (75-82), but I have found at least two examples with -561 ECU which perform in every way except for that short diagnostic buzz. The difference was in the program chip.

Try that 6 to 4 jumper. Listen for the pumps. If they run, try starting it then, with the jumper in place.

      Dan and Bruce,
      Thanks for the replies.

I am amazed at how clean and un-corroded the fuse panel is. I am thinking the car had a large part of its life in a garage.

I went back out last night to try again and I could not get it to start. So since my eldest son was home now with his 240, I took a known good relay and popped it in. Voila! It started immediately.

So I need to get another relay and try to find the bad spot on the one I have to solder (that will be new for me, I need to find someone who'll teach me that skill).

The thing I want to do to satisfy my curiousity is to try jumping it with the relay in place, I remember that I did not jump and hit the starter switch when I got it to start. I mentioned to Art that I did not read his post closely.

I want to do that to observe that indeed with the suspected bad relay in place, jumping it and hitting the starter would me that it is indeed the relay.

Either way I am picking up another relay. On the new relays, does it matter if I buy from ipd/fcp/dealer or are the relays through the chain stores acceptable?

I hope I did not kick a hornet's nest with that question.

      Tony, Art and Pageda,

Thanks for the replies. It runs!!!

Art, I saw this same photo and explanation from digging into older posts earlier before I came home ... Thanks Art!

I jumpered fuses 4 and 6 and we heard the pump whir. I did not turn the key to position 3. (must not have read closely). I went to relay, unplugged it, took off cover, exercised it manually. I re-plugged the relay with cover off, turned the key and watched as it actuated slowly, then the car started, about 2-3 seconds.

My youngest son and I started smiling and were so happy that we started looking for things to put on the list before the car gets on the road.

After 10 minutes we shut it down and it started immediately.

We repeated this several times. Started fine. So, I'm thinking I still may have a failing/intermittent relay. Right? So I will pick one up as soon as possible.

My son is now begging me to start making the rounds at the Pick and Pulls.

The list so far; replace broken bracket that holds OBD, replace broken rear tag light assembly, new tires, find and fix exhaust leak, fix non working dash lights and fix the non working reverse lights.

      Thanks again.

        Maybe...

But that fuse jumper also bypasses fuse 6. So bad contacts there will cause the same symptoms and problems. Make sure the fuse and contact springs are clean and tight.

So with a new relay are there brands to avoid?

And since I have not soldered electronics before, just copper plumbing, is there a certain size solder that is preferred when soldering the relay?

Congratulations! While at the junk yard get a spare ECU, AMM, overdrive relay, and powerstage/ignition amplifier for future use and troubleshooting.

Replace the crank position sensor if the insulation on the wire is cracked.

If you can solder try re-soldering the circuit board on the fuel relay

25 amp fuse disappeared. Power is at fuse #6.

I believe the later 200's also did not have a pre run pump.

I think you can get away with a quicky Jumper to bypass teh relay. The fused jumper is overkill. Just watch it and look for wire insulation smoke.

      Thanks.

Tony H- What do you mean
"I believe the later 200's also did not have a pre run pump"?
Does that mean I would not expect to hear a hum when key is turned to position II?

One of the things that I was amazed at was how fresh and un-corroded the fins at the fuse panel looked.
I am hoping this car will prove to be a good find.

Thanks again. I'll post back what happens.

Place a jumper on the left side of fuses 4 and 6, this bypasses the relay. If you hear the pumps and the engine starts the relay is bad.
