Transmission fluid to use on high-mileage 940 900

Everyone,

I am working through some baseline maintenance on a new-to-me 1994 940 turbo w/ 211k and I am considering doing a fluid flush on the transmission. I am considering what fluid to use and I have seen recommendations on the FAQ to use a good synthetic ATF such as Mobil 1 / Redline ATF. While I don't mind making the investment, these fluids can be expensive for the 12 quarts I understand I will be needing (~$10 a quart the few places I have found it). Any recommendations on where to find these fluids cheap? Or does anyone else have other recommendations on different ATF fluids to use? Thanks in advance!

Brian

I am very happy with Amsoil in my transmission and elsewhere. As an added benefit now that gas prices are approaching $4 here in South Florida, because I've had the same car for so long, I was able to observe a 0.5 mpg increase after using Amsoil where ever fluids are required - power steering, engine oil, trans, rear axle, etc.

Dexron III was the fluid spec'd for your trans back in "the day", but there are higher specs for Dexron now.

GM (who hold the trademark to the Dexron name) released the Dexron VI spec in 2005 and you can find this fluid everywhere now. GM state that it is compatible with earlier Dexron spec's and has superior performance in regards to foaming, lubrication, shear stability and oxidation.

I don't argue that a synthetic ATF is the gold standard, but the Dexron VI is probably 95% as good at about half the price. The most important thing is to use a quality fluid and change it every 50k or so. That and making sure your engine radiator is in good shape and not leaking coolant into its integrated ATF cooler.

My experience is with the AW70 in an '86 244. Original transmission is still shifting well at 331,000 miles and 25 years old. I've used off-brand transmission fluid since the car was new and flush it every 50K miles.

I am more picky with motor oil and have used only Mobil 1 since the first oil change at 1200 miles way back when. But with tranny fluid, if it meets spec, I don't think it makes much difference, especially on a high mileage car.

Save your money for something else, like good tires and brake pads.

I concur with Mr. Johnson. I buy whatever fluid meets specs and both my AW's are trouble free. One has 240k miles and the other over 400. Just change it on a regular basis and you're golden!

      Mobil 1 can't hurt!

I've had good results with Valvoline Max Life atf. It is synthetic and meets the specs for my Audi S8. Sometimes I've seen it in gallon containers at NAPA or you can get a case delivered from Amazon for $67.00 (if you have a prime acct).

    Dear MisterBLC,

Hope you're well. If the in-service automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is a clear, rosy red, I'd re-flush with Mobil 1. If the in-service ATF is any other color - e.g., dark red, brown, black, orange, milky - I'd put in Wal-Mart ATF, and drive the car for a thousand miles, and the re-flush with Mobil 1. The double-flush will help to ensure that all old/contaminate ATF is removed.

Whatever the cost of ATF, it is small relative to the cost of replacing a failed unit.

You might watch ads for Advance Auto Parts. I recently bought a dozen quarts of Mobile 1 ATF for about $8/quart.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Spook has the right idea. I purchased 12 quarts through Advance Auto Parts and paid $8 and change with free shipping to my front door. That was about 10 months ago. The flush made a tremendous difference and my 91 945SE now shifts very smooth with ZERO issues.
I would say the extra $$ were well spent!
