Crank and no start, then fired right up... 200

Went to rescue my wife with a no start issue.

It was cranking but wasn't firing up.

Loosened the hose that comes from the fuel pump to the fuel
rail to check for fuel pressure. Turned it over a few times and
fuel shot out.

Hooked the hose back up to the fuel rail and the car fired right up
and I drove it home.

Could I be losing fuel pressure intermittently?

Possibly a fuel pressure regualtor issue?

I have both fuel pumps with the filter on hand and need to replace them,
but am I missing another problem elsewhere?

Thanks for the help in advance!! I'm running an 85' 245 - new plugs, cap, rotor, wiring harness and the lot

When I went out an rescued a wagon last winter it ended up being the main fuel pump. The car was driving fine around the block where I was picking it up from. The next day I went to get an oil change and stopped at a gas station about 2 miles away. When I went to turn the car back on it wouldn't start. It cranked fine. The hot no start happens when you've been driving and then turn the car off and then try and restart it a short time later. The main pump must be worn in such a way that it gets stuck. If you hit it just right it might work again. I once pounded on the bottom of a gas tank of a mini van that had failed to start in the bank's drive up. It got the van going for some lady who said as she drove off, "Now I don't have to see a mechanic". Of coarse I cautioned her to get to one before turning the van off again.

It could be the main pump. The pic n pull on 3300 S has 6 240's at the moment if that helps. Look for a clean one with a yellow stripe. When my in-tank pump went out on me years ago the car was driving fine and then it would start to starve for fuel and almost die but then run. It did that on and off for a day or two before it totally stopped.

Have you swapped out the fuel filter next to the main pump? My 83 has had 3 filter changes due to dirt or some fine sediment getting into the tank. You might have a plugged filter too. Check valve attaches to the main pump and keeps pressure in the line.

... and I have that grill if you need it and come to think of it I pulled the main pump off my sedan that I'm parting out. If your anywhere near you can have both. Its not that new but it works as a tester for sure.

What year is the car? Intermittent no-starts can be CPS.

Or a leaking injector. If it happens again tell your wife to crank it a lot, maybe even put the pedal down.

Intermittent starting problems are usually related to either the fuel pump relay or the fuses for the fuel pumps or the 25 amp fuse near the battery. Make sure the fuses are clean and tight in the holders and check for corrosion. Replace the relay or re-solder the cracks on the circuit board.

Before my Fuel Pump ( Main) totally died, it gave me these episodes.
It may be the Main pump is dying a slow death.
I'm not familiar with the earlier FI that your car has. Hopefully someone will be a bigger help

I have had the 'hot motor, no start' issue in the summer.

Also in the summer I can hear my main fuel pump quite clearly.

I've anticipated this issue, and I could be possibly just running on the
main fuel pump with the prepump having died a while ago.

I did replace the fuel pump relay, so it looks like I need swap the fuel pumps, oh joy...

I had a similar issue last summer that turned out to be the ignition coil. I always had spark, but it would not always start. If you have a spare coil it'd be worth checking. Good luck.

          regarding the injector seal question.
There two minds about this, so use your best judgement concerning these procedures.
          1. spray water around the injectors, and listen for a decrease in engine rpms.

          2. Spray carb cleaner around the injectors and listen for an increase in engine rpms.
This is the general accepted test for vacuum leaks in general.
          Happy hunting.
          Paul
