91 245 Check engine light 200 1991

I am the proud new owner of a $700 245 with many little issues. One is that the check engine light is on. I checked the fuel system fault codes and got three:
-Fuel injector circuit fault
-Lean or rich condition during cruise
-Extremely lean or rich condition during cruise

The car itself seems to be running fine, any ideas what the issue might be?

Thanks for the help!

Clear them by removing the 25 amp fuse near the battery and see if they return.

Make that fuse 6 in the fuse box, the 91 was the first year without the 25 amp fuse.
      Thanks Art

Thanks, I'll try that and see if anything persists. Any reason why it's better to clear them that way than my using the little button on the code reader dohicky? Just faster?

The reason I pull the fuse is because no matter how slow and diligent I am at doing the Code Clearing procedure, It never works.

Lean running conditions might be caused by Intake manifold leaks.
Check for cracks in the Larger Bellows to the Throttle body, check the small vacuum line tat runs from Fuel Pressure regulator (on the Fuel rail) down to the Intake manifold.
Does teh car Idle very well or does it stumble?

It idles fine in neutral, but when it's cold the idle gets real low when I put it into reverse or drive while I'm holding the brake. This clears up quite quickly as the car warms up. This is my first automatic 240, the rest are all stick, so I'm not quite sure what normal is like when you put the car into gear, but I'm pretty sure it isn't this.

The way I understand it, is the button sequence clears the codes but does not reset any learned mapping changes (fuel trim in the case of the fuel ECU) where a fuse pull instantly clears all limp-home and long-term adaptive trim. I wish I knew for damned certain, but it has been my habit to pull the fuse and give the system 10 miles to come up with any new complaints. And it is easier.

My experience is the procedure described to clear codes does not reliably do that.

And as Art says it is a good idea to clear the adaptive memory that may not be good for current conditions.

Great, thanks guys! I'm going to give that a shot and cross my fingers. The previous owner said his mechanic suspected the idle stabilizer valve. I had a known good one, so I've swapped it in. I'm going to pull that fuse, and once I get to the DMV to register the car, which will be a few days :(, I'll rack up those ten miles or so and see how everything is.

              Thanks again!

Yes that would be the Idle air control valve (IAC), make sure that and the throttle body are nice and clean.

Well, I pulled fuse 6, and now the car won't even run. Clearly the temporary mapping was doing a ton. I need to hold the gas down to keep the engine from dying. It backfires a bit through the intake.

While I was in there I also cleaned the grounds on the fuel rail, and I cleaned the AMM. Any ideas? What to look for next?

Found it! The AMM bench tested fine, but for the hell of it I plugged in a spare I had on the shelf. The car started right up and runs better than before clearing the codes!

                    Thanks for the help everyone!

You discovered the only reliable way to test for a bad AMM. Now get another one incase it happens again.

Good idea. Any suggestions on the best place to buy one? Or to have my bad one rebuilt?

The junk yard or eBay, look for one that is guaranteed to work and test it out when you get it.

Tony H has some good advise about the airbox thermostat, the best way to fix it is to block the hot air from the exhaust manifold or if you have no visual inspections remove the tube and plug the inlet to the airbox.

Yep, I'm gonna open up the airbox and block it off so that the air has to come in from outside.

Check teh Thermostat in your Air Cleaner. It is probably broken in the 'open' position. This means that very hot air is allowed to pass through the AMM.
That's not good. Many of us close off the Hot air inlet.
