Swapping a Solid Axle into an IRS Sedan 700

I'm looking at a pretty nice 760T sedan for my mom. Has about 100k and its only real issue is it has a clunk in the rear end. The dealer told them it wouldn't affect their daily driving habits (whatever thats supposed to mean) but there's obviously something wrong there, and as with anything of the independent rear, I doubt its cheap or easy. I'm not a fan of the whole Nivomat setup and would seriously swap out the entire rear suspension from a solid rear axle car if I knew it was possible.

Has anyone ever done this or know of it being done? I need to know in the next day or so if possible. Thanks.

if you're good with a hammer and a torch, it can be done. the floor is completely different and there's no place for the suspension pickups.

look for the clunk. it's probably the big mounting bushing that sits on the nose of the diff. not that bad to get done. good luck, chuck.

Could it be the exhaust system hitting something with each bump in the road?

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike

I have not heard of it, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. BUT, to do it, you'd have to do a lot I think in terms of mounts for trailing arms, a subframe for the torque arms to mount to, redo brake lines, maybe more.
The Niv's can be swapped out for standard shocks and springs, it's in the FAQ. BUT, my friend who did it said it rode better with the Niv's/soft springs.
My suggestion, have a responsible shop look to see what the clunk is. That is an odd thing for a dealer to say.
Clunk as in ujoints? A one time thing, or??
