1. The short shifter mod requires MAJOR SURGERY to the floor/tunnel.
Since this is the major structural backbone of the floor it is a pretty serious matter.
2. I would use the more robust shifter of a late 140 rather than one out of an 1800.

As Kent says, the old shifter is simpler, very robust and pretty much trouble-free as long as you keep the cap tight.

I just made the switch from an M40 to and M41 in my '68 220 and it went very nicely. I did not choose to use the "short" shifter, so had to replace the top of the transmission, but had a good friend from whom I could borrow one. I really do like the feel and look of the old "broomstick" shifter, plus one does not have to do the whole modification thing with floor pan, mats/carpet etc. I purchased a really great toggle switch with a tiny light in the end at a local harware store that I mounted in an extra hole on the dash for the OD switch. One word of caution!!!!!! No matter what you do, have the OD wired BEFORE you install the transmission!!!!! It took me most of a morning to finally attach the wires on mine while the transmission was in place. One must have triple-jointed arms and be able to hold onto teeny-tiny electrical connectors with two fingers while trying to make the connections. I even thought about dismounting the transmission!!! I will NEVER make that mistake again!!!!

Good luck,

Kent
