transmission 200 1989

I have an '89 240, auto. last week The tranny had a hard time staying in high gear, and then I lost third and reverse, followed by first (It revs up but won't engage. When trans is cool it shifts ok, but after fifteen minutes of driving, less in the city, I lose gears.
If I pull over, shut of the car and let things cool down for a few minutes it will shift again for a while before I start losing gears.
Any info would help. I Drained the fluid and put in the correct amount of tranny fluid today, in case i had too much, or the fluid was done.

Thank you

I could be shunned from the board for this advice, but what the heck. An old trick that I've tried and sometimes works, is pour some brake fluid in, it swells the seals and actually gets it working again.

My grandmas car has been driven for about 5 years on a bad tranny salvaged with brake fluid.
I run a plow truck and it actually got me through an evening of plowing until I was able to replace the
    tranny the next day.

If your tranny is toast and your planning on replacing it anyways, give this a try.
