92 - 240 fuse issue - anyone had this problem before??? 200 1992

Mentioned on previous posts - had issues with an aftermarket "kill switch" that has since been removed. When dealing with this - noticed that #6 fuse (fuel pump) had melted plastic but not blown.

Replaced the fuse and she started right up. So I took sandpaper and cleaned the contacts (on both sides) very good and made certain that I had a brand new fuse.

Now Vickie starts perfectly fine the vast majority of times (prob 70%) - however occasionally she will turn over and simply not start. Sometimes you have to just twist the #6 fuse and she will start - other times I've had to take the fuse out - run some sandpaper over the copper and put the fuse back in. However she has always "eventually" started after playing with the #6 fuse.

I've replaced the fuses several times, but this still keeps happening. - I've even pulled the wires out of the fusebox - cleaned the spade contacts and made sure the connectors were on very tight.

Of course - all I can seem to find is these new "plastic" bodied fuses - I'm wondering if the older ceramic bodied fuses would work any better. (anyone know a source for these??) - Maybe some of that electrical grease on the ends of the fuse to help ensure good electrical contact.

I don't want to have to go the route of pulling the wires out of the fuse panel and using a separate fusible link - but MOMMA AIN'T HAPPY!!! - so I gotta get this fixed!!!

Any ideas / help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Charles

Flosser (German) ceramic brass and copper fuses are what you are looking for. They sell them at IPD, FCP, EeuroParts and EBay sells them. The plastic tin ones will work in a pinch, but corrode your contacts.

      Thanks Bork,

I've been lucky enough to find plastic with copper/brass at O'Riley, and that is what I've been using (due to the tin/copper corrosion issue you mentioned), but didn't know where to find the ceramic ones.

Looks like my parts order just got a bit bigger.

      Thanks again.

If there was enough current to cause the fuse to partially melt, it is also possible that the connector for the fuel pump relay has become deformed causing a poor connection. If Jorrell's recommendation does not fix the problem, take a close look at the connector.

If you really think it is the fuse, re-tension the fuse holder to put more pressure on the tips of the fuse. If that doesn't do the trick, replace the fuel pump relay, especially if the voltage check across the fuse shows near zero volts when in failure mode! The fuel pump relay failure mode is random at best, but it also seems to have a "critical detector" built in just like copier machines before a board meeting!

Thanks Jorrell, I forgot to mention that I did re-adjust the fuse contacts when I cleaned the spade connectors for the wires to the fuse box. It's so tight, it's difficult to get a new fuse in (have to hold the fuse with needle nose pliers to get enough pressure to push the contacts back).

I hadn't thought about the Fuel Pump Relay because "playing" with the fuse has always gotten it to start.

Since I've got to be ordering a new blower motor - guess I'll just add that on to the list of parts I'm fixing to order!.

      Thanks again

I've had the exact same problem - and only on my fuel pump fuse. It's a bit of an eye opening experience when you notice it, because the fuse looks good until you grab it and notice that it's loose and investigate further. Like you, the fix was to replace the fuse. I cleaned up the contacts with some fine sandpaper AND applied a bit of silicone dielectric grease. The dielectric grease probably doesn't improve the connection, but it keeps air and moisture from causing that nice clean metal to start corroding again. I make it a policy to apply a bit of dielectric grease to every connection I fiddle with. Do yourself a favor and buy the big tube of the stuff too because you'll be using it on everything.

Also, the way they manufacture those cheap plastic bodied fuses will limit the amount of contact area to the fuse clips leaving you with an unreliable connection or one side that gets hotter than the other. Reject any fuses that look "wonky" and re-bend your fuse clips to align properly with the ends of the fuses.

I've not had a fuel pump problem since then (for a few years), but that doesn't mean you may have a weak relay or dirty +/- connections at the fuel pump.

        Good luck!
        Steve

Just to be sure, the next time it doesn't start, check the load side with a voltmeter, or just jumper the fuse, just to be sure it's actually that fuse which is the problem or something else that just decides to work after you play with the fuse awhile.
If you are sure it is the fuse, then that OXY Clean will work, for awhile...

      will check -

Problem is most of the time, it fails on my wife and not me since it is now her Daily driver. (after her MB 300SDL developed a cracked head)

But I will keep it in mind.

      Thanks
      Charles
