Got her to pass smog! and tranny question 1989 240 200

It turns out the fuel pressure regulator was bad. Also a leak between Cat to header pipe. The metal donut between the two pipe flanges was too small and the 3 nut/bolts could not tigthen the collar assembly. You could actually spin the collars. I wrapped the donut with exhaust manifold tape to build it out and reinstall for a tight clamp connection.

So now the bad.....My 87 740T wagon just failed smog in Cali and this one is old with over 300k miles with bad interior... it is time to retire to the state for $1000 to $1500.

Gonna keep the 240.

....but question on 240 auto tranny. After backing out of driveway or parking spot, when I then put into D, there is a slight hestitation/slip in tranny before it kicks in, then it drives/shifts great. Only happens with the R to D transition.

thoughts gang???

Rob

Most likely you are low on fluid but why not just do a fluid flush just in case? This fixes all the other potential problems that do not involve dropping the tranny. Besides, all it takes is two wrenches, tubing and about 3 gal of cheap ATF from your favorite bargain retailer.

Before you do a flush, slip under the car and investigate everything aft of the tail shaft bushing just to see if you might be misting enough tranny fluid to loose a bit over along period but not enough to leave a spot on the driveway.

do they really give that much for a car? I had a friend gift me a 240 from california earlier this year because they said the yard would only give them $150. Got a link to the state website for the $1000 program? Thanks.

Depends on what failed with the smog. What are the numbers and others will help determine if its something simple.

It appears $1500 is for low income owners. $1000 for the rich folks.

The 740t failed on NOx at both speeds by approx 40% over limit and couple points HC 15 mph.
This car is tired but I just did a headgasket job on it. I am getting pretty good at those now.

I could get more from state than private sale.
