Blown Fuse from Old Wires? 200 1988

Hello all,

A few days ago my 1988 245 died suddenly after two minutes of driving. I immediately checked all fuses in the passenger compartment, then fiddled with the Fuel Pump relay. I am embarrassed to say I totally forgot to check the 25amp fuse in the engine compartment, so I had the car towed to my usual place. When I picked up the car later, the guy had changed the 25amp fuse and put in a new cap and rotor and set of wires ($100 for those parts – not OEM, plus labor). He said that old wires probably caused the fuse to blow. Is that possible? So far it hasn't happened again.

I had a no start years ago that turned out to be a cap and rotor.

You should make sure the 25 amp fuse holder and connection to the battery is corrosion free. Maybe even replace the fuse holder with a water proof marine unit.

I didn't think it made much sense. He said that the old wires have increased resistance and caused the fuse to blow. He said the 25amp fuse is for ignition. I thought it had something to do with the fuel pump.

Fuses don't blow from increased resistance; they blow from too much current going through them. Increased resistance would simply restrict or stop the flow of power.

I once had a no-start condition that involved the FI fuse holder disintegrating which opened the circuit but the fuse itself was fine. My mechanic replaced the fuse holder, which I later upgraded to one of those rubber-covered fuse holders to protect it from the elements in the engine compartment.

I actually bought 2 of those sealed fuse holders from IPD a few years ago. I installed one in my other 240, and I never got around to doing this one.

I bought mine from Radio Shack, and it's actually good quality.

I've never seen one of these fuses blow or have I heard anyone on the brick board in the past 5 years say its happened. I have replaced a fuse and fixed the issue of the fuse just not making good contact in the holder. I've even swapped out one used fuse for another and had it work while the non working fuse worked fine in the other car I swapped it with.

Mechanics are chumps. I can't stand how they rely on the general public's ignorance towards cars to just get into the routine of finding work when a car is brought to them. I always like how no matter what my old mechanic would charge a full hour for diagnosis even when the issue was as simple as a FI relay. Or the best is looking back over my records and finding I replaced the AMM multiple times due to the thermostat going bad ever 2 years.

The reason I still go to this guy is he doesn't give me attitude and he'll install parts that I buy myself and give to him. You'd think he would try to encourage me to let him supply the parts by charging me a reasonable price. When I asked why the aftermarket wires were $69 he assured me that most good wire sets are over $100. I don't know where he shops!
