Gauges 1800

I've also posted this in the Yahoo 1800 forum. I'm considering converting to gauges made by Auto Meter. Is anyone using their stuff, or has found other electric gauge sets with sensors fit our cars?

I've also been looking at Speedhut gauges. They have an excellent reputation. I asked if they could modify their Speedhut line of black gauge faces to include the blue inner ring our gauges have. For a charge of 25.00 per gauge, yes. I'm waiting for a sample of their light blue and if I like it I'll order a voltmeter.

Very nice. That's close to what I'm after except that I'm thinking of white faces, which are easier to see without my reading glasses.
Are those Auto Meters? I've been exchanging emails with their tech people on how to fit their sensors to the B18 block. What was your solution?

        Hello,

Those are Autometer Sports-Comp gauges and I believe Autometer does make the same size gauges with a white background.

To install the Autometer water and oil temperature senders, we gutted a pair of used 140/240 water temperature senders and drilled all the way through and tapped.

We used an universal gas sender that has the correct ohm range for the Autometer gas gauge.

Make sure to get the universal sender with 6 mounting holes.

Did you thread the probe collars to fit the 3/8" or 1/2" NPT sensors?

            Hello,

The water and oil temperature sensors we are using from Autometer are 1/8 NPT.

We removed the guts from a pair of in/op, or used 140/160/240 water temperature sensors, retaining just the brass.

Then we drilled all the way through and then tapped.

Using the old senders is a good idea. I may be able to score some of them from my local friendly vintage Volvo garage. When I dropped by today the service manager was showing off his 544. He put a "Y" connector in the oil pressure fitting on his B20 block and ran one line to his VDO pressure gauge and another to his VDO oil temp gauge.
Does your speedo operate on a cable from the tranny? The Speedhut GPS driven speedometers are pretty space-age but I have to wonder about the lag time and shadowing from trees and such.

Sensing oil temp at pressure port??? 1800

"a "Y" connector in the oil pressure fitting on his B20 block and ran one line to his VDO pressure gauge and another to his VDO oil temp gauge."

That sounds a bit strange...I installed such a splitter on my 1800 which allowed me to add an oil pressure switch which enables an audible alarm, but that is NOT the place you want to sense oil temp at...normally it is sensed at the sump....

            Cheers

I respect his skills as a mechanic but I intend to use the boss on the side of the oil pan to measure oil temp. The challenge has been to find a way to adapt the gauge sensor sized in NPT to our 3/8" flare thread. Eric's idea of drilling and tapping an old temp probe and mounting the sensor in it is one of the best ideas I've heard yet.
